Chapter twenty-four
EVIE
The first thing Evie noticed when she arrived was the gleam in Seanâs eyes. He opened the door, wearing blue jeans and a white button-down, a smile and an aura of calm that hadnât been there since⦠well, since sheâd first met him at the pub. She smiled back and raised a knowing eyebrow at him. As she walked past him into the room, she lightly patted his chest as though to say, âWell done.â
On the other hand, Brit looked as guarded as ever, even though she appeared to be striving for normalcy. She was leaning back against the kitchen counter, cradling her coffee mug at chest level, wearing blue jean cut-offs and white t-shirt, with the slip-on tennis shoes Evie had bought her.
âGood morning, Brit,â she greeted, feeling overdressed in her yellow cap-sleeved blouse and white trousers.
Brit smiled. âHello, Evie.â
Stepping further into the room so she could look at them both, Evie asked the obvious, âIs there a specific reason why Iâm here today?â Surely she hadnât been invited to celebrate the occasion of renewed sexual relations.
Sean looked at Brit. She held his gaze for a few seconds and then contemplated the color of her coffee. He answered, âI went to talk to Jasper.â
Evie looked over at Brit, but that one appeared to have found something spectacularly interesting inside her mug other than coffee. She looked back at Sean. âOn a whim? You have to get on a list to get inside the prison. When was this?â
âYesterday.â
Evie looked back at Brit, who still didnât look as though she was interested in the conversation. âYou two havenât talked about it before now?â
Sean smiled at her. âIt wasnât⦠productive.â
Brit looked up at that, her eyes hard. Slamming her mug down on the counter, she pushed off it. âYou two go ahead and chat it out; Iâm not interested in this.â She headed toward the patio doors.
Sean side-stepped and held out his arm to stop her. âYou canât avoid it.â
âAvoid it?â she asked. âNo, I canât avoid it; I donât get to avoid it. Itâs on me; itâs in me, so no, thereâs no option for me. How many times do I have to point that out to you? But I also donât have to sit and listen to the two of you debate how I get to be affected by it.â
Evie ventured, âYou arenât curious as to what he told Sean?â
Brit looked at her like she was insane. âI know what he said. Itâs a damn recording in my head. I was there.â She gave Sean a menacing look. âTo complete the picture for you, the wine was a red; a lovely little Cab from the south of France. Sorry, the name escapes me.â
Seanâs eyes narrowed as his tone dropped, warning, âBrit.â
Brit made a reflexive motion as though she wanted to throw something at him, then looked around as though seeking out a missile.
Sean chuckled deeply. âYou set down your mug.â Or else Evie was confident heâd be wearing the contents.
