Undivided (5)

When your allies stand united as one, there is no enemy you cannot defeat! Each stack of Undivided grants a slight boost to all stats and increased mana recovery.

The lion charged for another attack. Two of the humans behind me let loose with a flurry of fireballs. I braced myself against my standard, refusing to budge an inch, and blocked the monster’s fangs with my sword. The giant cat hissed in pain as the fire scorched through its metallic coat of fur. The shining golden bristles burned away, exposing patches of red flesh on the sides of the monster’s face.

With a weak spot revealed, the humans on my left and right lunged forward and attacked, striking at the exposed flesh. I was surprised when the cat recoiled in pain with each strike, backing away until it was outside the ring of my Rally.

“Company! Advance!” I barked. As a unit, we marched forward until my allies were in range to strike the lion once more. The magic users let fly another volley of spells, further burning away the fur on its shoulders and forelimbs.

This time, when it lunged to strike me, I was prepared. I raised my sword over my head and brought it crashing down upon a bare patch on the monster’s face. Meat Cleaver did its job, slicing right into the beast’s skull. It hollered in agony and dropped to the sand, blood pouring from the open wound on its muzzle.

My allies made short work of it after that. Some lunged in and started striking it in the exposed flanks, while the casters behind me unleashed a salvo of fireballs. Finally, I jogged over to the creature’s side and stabbed it right through the forehead, landing a finishing blow and putting it out of its misery.

The monster was dead. The crowd cheered in delight for our performance, and one by one, my allies dispersed back to their iron gates. I noticed that my melee fighters were missing one. I felt bad for the soldier I’d lost in combat.

I returned to my gate and it creaked open. The tall woman applauded me from the middle of the room.

“An honorable battle. You will make a fine Warlord,” she declared. “Do you wish to complete this path and officially become a Warlord?”

Part of me wanted to say yes. Part of me wanted to say no. I was curious to see what the other paths were like and if maybe I enjoyed them more. I thought better of it, though. I knew that I would need to be the tank, the leader my party required me to be.

For the first time since landing in this gnoll body, I didn’t lament the fact that I wasn’t a Mage. Instead, a Warrior was precisely the class I’d needed to start as.

“I do,” I told the woman.

The woman grinned at me in delight and saluted with a fist over her heart. “Then step through the door and return to the waking world as a Warlord. Serve your people well.
