Chapter Thirteen

In the basement of the Anvil Phil was coming out of his wine induced coma. As he opened his eyes he saw Lynne still asleep, slumped over an empty beer barrel. He put his hand on his head which felt like it was going to explode. Looking down at the floor he noticed the empty wine bottles that they had both been drinking. Great he thought, there goes all my profit. 'Lynne, wake up'.

'Ugh, go away and let me sleep'.

Phil managed to stand up and almost fell straight back down again.

'Get up will you; I need to sort this place out'.

He scouted his eyes around the basement hoping he would see the two police officers, but there was no sign. He opened the door and started walking up the stairs to the bar.

'Lynne! Come on, get off the floor'.

Lynne pushed the hair out of her face and pulled herself up from the floor, taking a swig from the open bottle next to her.

'What are you going on about?' said Lynne as she helped herself to vodka from the optic.

'The police have disappeared so stop bloody worrying'.

Phil went behind the bar and grabbed the vodka from her, 'are you being serious? People don't just vanish in to thin air'.

Lynne ignored him and poured herself another vodka. Phil grabbed it out of her hand, spilling it all over her top.

'I can't believe you just did that' screamed Lynne as she leant back and punched Phil on the nose, sending him backwards over the bar on to on a table which then collapsed under his weight. He lay there stunned for a moment.

'I think I've broken my back'.

Lynne peered over the bar at him.

'Don't be stupid, your fat arse would have protected you. You shouldn’t have taken my bloody vodka'.

'No, I'm being serious; I don't think I can get up'.

Phil tried to move his legs but nothing would happen.

'You're going to have to phone an ambulance Lynne'.

'Fine' said Lynne as she necked a vodka on the third attempt, 'but I'm using your phone'.

'I don't care what phone you use, just call them'.

Just as Lynne picked up the phone there was a knock on the pub door.

'Don't answer it, just phone the damn ambulance'.

Lynne ignored him again and walked towards the door. On the other side of the glass were a young boy and girl, the boy Lynne recognised as one of Toby's friends.

'Luke isn't it?' said Lynne opening the door.

Luke and Sarah ran inside, stopping when they saw Phil on the floor with a broken table underneath him.

'Is he OK?' asked Luke pointing at Phil.

'He's fine. Have you seen Toby? He owes me twenty quid'.

Luke looked at Lynne. Her hair was greasy and her clothes were dirty and stained. She also stank of booze.

'Dunno, not seen him.'

'Rubbish. You two always hang out together. I guess they let him out of hospital then'.

Luke felt a burst of hatred fly up from his stomach.

'Yeah, I have seen him actually, not that you care about him you drunk tramp'.
