I keep checking my phone, just in case there's a message from him. But there's nothing. No text. No missed call. I know I should be grateful. Despite what he said about it not being over, Max seems to be letting me go. I try to be realistic about things. I never expected it to last with him. No need to dwell on it. But the truth is Iâm having withdrawal symptoms. the physical side of being with Max was like being on drugs.
Julian has been my rock. He insisted on helping me with my catering event, being there for moral support. He keeps telling me I was far too good for him anyway, and that Max is a fool, which is rather ironic considering what he did to me a year ago. But still, I appreciate his well-meant words. Although I'd love for him to stay a few days more, because he's my comfort zone, he's got to go back to London tonight.
I need to sharpen up, get myself running my own show again as I have a busy schedule ahead. Thereâs a function to cater for literally every other day. I can't mope about in a funk when my professional reputation and livelihood are at stake.
I rise from the sofa and pick up my diary, where I record all my booking details. I thumb through mindlessly, trying to get myself in gear, process what I need to do. I come to a stop at Jack's stag-do. It's not for a while yet, but I need to get going on that within the next week because it's different to my usual party.
Jules is lying on my sofa, and has his headphones on, and his eyes closed. He's lost in his world of weird funky jazz that he loves. We never did see eye to eye where music was concerned. Along with a few other things like cleaning rotas, and tidiness. I touch his arm and he opens his eyes with a smile.
âOkay?â he says, taking his headphones off.
âYeah. I Sâpose.â
âYou wanna know something? Despite everything that's happened the last few days, and please don't take this the wrong way, I've seen you in another light. You've got a very vulnerable side, and that's appealing. If youâd shown me this side Iââ
I interrupt with a warning hand. âJules, donât ââ
âMmm, well I guess what's done is done.â He smiles a regretful smile. âLook, if you're up for it, I'd like to take you for dinner. Your choice.â
âThatâll be nice. Fancy a Chinese? There's a good one in Cheltenham.â
âSure, go get yourself ready then,â he replies, standing up and following me as I walk through to the bedroom. He heads into the bathroom. Without thinking, I strip off, down to my underwear. I turn towards the wardrobe and catch his eye as he stands at the bathroom sink drying his face and hands. He's staring at me. I stare back.
âAnd?â I say bravely, but I can see what's written on his face.
