Chapter Seventeen

I called Eastie Times’s main number and left a message. I said I’d found what Mr. Elliot indicated might be there, and I wanted to talk to him.

I made the call with Flannagan and half a dozen techs surrounding me, ready to trace any return call. But seconds became minutes, and soon minutes had turned into a quarter of an hour, and then half.

“Maybe all the calls from cops have spooked him,” I said.

“Or maybe he’s the Southside Stalker, and he did what he wanted to do: get you into the lower level.”

We waited for an hour, but eventually Flannagan called it quits. “If he calls you, you contact us immediately, you understand? We can’t find anything to tie this guy to a physical address. Everything is fake.

“His domain’s registered under a false name. The site’s set up through a maze of proxies and VPN’s that has our tech team baffled. The phone’s a burner. This guy is either the killer, or the most paranoid nutjob this side of the Mason Dixon line.”

“He’s definitely paranoid,” Natalie put in. We all turned her way, and she shrugged. “I mean, assuming all the personas on the website are the same guy, there’s some really paranoid, weird, conspiracy stuff there.”

“There is?” I asked. In all the commotion, I hadn’t found time to look at the rest of the site.

Flannagan nodded. “He’s really concerned about incoming shipments. He’s got a theory that China’s smuggling Mercury into the bay in cargo containers, and dropping it in the water.”

I stared at him. “Why?”

“So it will get in the drinking water.”

“But…why?” I asked again.

“To cause fertility problems, and create a small, intellectually stunted population.”

“Okay…but why?”

He scoffed. “So they can beat us in the space race. So they can colonize Mars while we’re banging rocks together. Obviously.”

I laughed, and Nat said, “He’s got other theories too.”

“Some of the old classics,” Flannagan put in. “You know, the government spying on us with satellites. Fluoride in toothpaste.”

“And some weird ones that seem to be all his.”

“Like what?”

“Like, Norway is a sleeper cell nation, working for communist Russia.”

“Why Norway?”

Flannagan groaned. “If you’re interested, he’s got plenty of articles about it. But I need to get going. Thanks to you, I’ve got another serial killer to find.”

He sent the tech team on their way, leaving me a second phone – a direct line to the techies, to notify them if I got a call.

“There’s a uniform outside in his car,” Flannagan said. “Name’s Shield. Definitely give him shit for it. Everyone does, and he loves it.

“He’ll be in to do perimeter checks on the hour every hour. Someone else will be here at six to take his place. Either Williams or Becker. If you’re going somewhere, you tell them. If you’re expecting someone, you tell them. Understand?”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Trust me, we’re not doing this out of the goodness of our hearts, Wallace. But if you wind up dead, well, that Valentine female’ll turn you into the next Joan of Arc. And I’ll be…well, whoever cut her head off.
