All about Firestarter

Firestarter, the pyrokinetic girl.

Stephen King, with certain apprehension about writing about Carrie again, finishes the novel of a pyrokinetic girl in 1977 called Firestarter, after intercalating the writing with the previous novel The Dead Zone, his first bestseller. Again, biographers set two different dates to decide when were The Dead Zone and Firestarter really written. The first of them was conceived at the beginning of 1976, but is finally finished after writing a third of the novel Firestarter. This places it in 1976, which is why we conclude that both could have been started in 1976, even though they were finished in 1977, intercalated. We’ll leave it that way.

Firestarter is finally published on September 29th of 1980 by the Viking Press publisher (it’s the second promised novel) and again, King gains a new bestseller. That year, Steve had three novels in the bestseller list: The Shining, The Dead Zone and the recent Firestarter.

In 1981, Firestarter was nominated to the British Fantasy prize. Besides, before this novel was published, this piece was made into a series in the Omni magazine.

Firestarter was taken to the cinema and premiered on May 11 of 1984. It was directed by Mark L. Lester. There is no data about budget or income.

What “Firestarter” is about.

This is not a normal horror story, but a very good suspense novel, just like The Dead Zone or The Stand, among others. Firestarter tells the story of the little “firestarter” Charlie, who has the power of pyrokinesis, a way of controlled mental combustion, that she calls “the bad thing”. Charlie spends most of her time running away from the government or, more accurately, from the agents of the Scientific Intelligence Department. This “power” of Charlie is a combination between the genes of her parents, her mother has telekinetic powers and her father the ability called “pushing”, a surprising suggestion ability that affects others when he uses it. Her parents, in a moment of need, undergo some scientific tests with a powerful hallucinogen called “Lot Six”. This way, Dr. Wanless, who was responsible for the investigation, proves how the drug develops extraordinary psychic powers. When the daughter of both, Charlie, turns seven, the scientists decide to do another experiment but, in the attempt of capturing her, kill her mother, while the father and Charlie escape together. This is the shelled story.

Firestarter is the story of Andy and Charlene “Charlie” McGee, a couple composed of father and daughter that run away from a government agency also known as The Shop, which is located on the fictional suburb of Longmont, Virginia. During his college years, Andy participated in an experiment with “The Shop” with the “Lot Six”, a drug with hallucinogen effects similar to LSD. The drug induced minor telephonic and telekinesis abilities to his future wife, Victoria Tomlinson, while for him, the ability to dominate people with hypnosis, a strong suggestive power that he refers to as “the push”, because of the way he shows it. Victoria’s and his powers are psychologically limited and have immediate side effects.
