What was it with Celina? Lucca could not figure her out.

She blew hot and cold, melted into his arms and then withdrew until he was going out of his mind. He should probably walk away, but couldn’t afford to do that as long as Massimo was involved.

He wasn’t sure he could do it, anyway. It was as if he’d made a place for her inside his head, and now he couldn’t get her out of it.

Something happened between the Campo de San Marco and the palazzo last night, something that changed Celina’s mind. He’d been close to making her his, to turning her thoughts from his grandfather to him alone. Then suddenly the chance was gone.

She was attracted to him, he was sure of it. Her eyes were clear and approving when they met his. She responded to his touch, was warm and yielding in his arms. Yet there was a wariness about her that puzzled him as much as it intrigued him.

Most American women he’d known were not shy about asking for what they wanted, whether a meal in a fine restaurant or a night in bed. Not that there had been any great number. Girls from the States had been a fascinating novelty while he was at university, but he’d soon learned to steer clear. Brief and easy encounters didn’t satisfy him, and he’d grown wary of the sexual daring that lay in the smiles of those sleeping their way through the European Union.

Celina was different. She might be drawn to him, but something was holding her back.

She wasn’t about to tell him what it was; that much was obvious. His only alternative, then, was to stick close to her until he understood. Yes, or until whatever it was went away, and she came into his arms of her own accord.

It was strange, but as much as he longed for that moment, a part of him might regret it. He rather enjoyed her prickly attitude that kept him at a distance, their sparring back and forth with the zing of mental challenge. He liked her self-possession and lack of pretense, was pleased that she appreciated the palazzo without being awestruck by it. He genuinely liked her when he let down his guard.

That sneaking fondness was in addition to the drawing need of her that consumed him. His heartbeat turned uneven as he played the night before in his mind for the thousandth time. He’d been so lost in the perfect feel of her in his arms that he hadn’t given a damn if high water drowned Venice and the two of them with it. The urge to have her in his bed, bare skin to bare skin, to touch and hold, to taste the sweet, tangy essence of her and feel her moist heat surrounding him, was so consuming he’d been astounded, unbelieving, when she vanished into the palazzo.

He wanted her still with a passion that destroyed his peace and threatened his sanity. And he meant to have her even if it ran counter to everything he believed or had been taught.
