Velvet
It was Thursday evening and Velvet’s heart was aflutter. Luke had returned to work that week and just seeing him, she began once again to feel those strong urges to become a part of his life. She had not been able to go into his house for more than two weeks now. She had only stolen glances of him while driving past his house. She truly missed him.
It seemed to be a very ordinary day at work. Luke had passed her several times and even smiled at her once or twice. She felt on top of the world. If she could just get rid of Allie, all would be perfect in her life, Velvet thought.
Allie would still be at home with the baby for another ten weeks according to what Luke had mentioned prior to his leave. That meant that yes, she would be able to see Luke more often with him being back at work but no, she still could not venture into his house for quite some time. This irritated Velvet beyond belief. She was desperate for some more treasures and to feel close to Luke. She needed Allie out of the way!
Velvet had picked up her kids from their friend’s house after school at about 4:30 and being in the car, she could not resist the urge to drive past Luke’s house once again. Not only did she drive past once, but twice. She had noticed nothing abnormal, hadn’t even snatched a glimpse of Luke. It looked as if he and Allie might be out. There were no lights on, no doors opened, and no noticeable movements inside. Velvet was busy contemplating where Luke and Allie might be when suddenly the sound of sirens was upon her and with a quick glance out her rear-view mirror, she found that a police officer was behind her and that she was being pulled over. She couldn’t for the life of her imagine why. She wasn’t speeding and hadn’t broken any laws that she could think of. She muttered a few obscenities as she pulled to the side of the road. She was at the end of Luke’s street and didn’t want to be seen by him. The fact that her kids were with her at this point was unimportant to Velvet right now. In fact, she had forgotten they were even in the backseat until she heard, “Why are you stopping?” come from her oldest, Jacob. “What do the cops want?” continued Jacob.
She quickly shushed him and rolled the window down to speak to the upcoming officer. The officer asked her if she lived in the neighborhood and Velvet was quick to answer no, and that she had stopped by her grandmother’s house and was now stopping by a friend’s house. He pointed his flashlight toward the backseat and then onto the passenger seat. Velvet immediately started shaking and became very agitated. She knew that Luke and Allie’s mail and keys were on the passenger seat still; from the last time she had been in their house and hoped that the officer hadn’t noticed them.
