Jill called back that evening. Her best friend telepathy seemed to assume it was a not a happy phone call. She just said, "Are you all right?" and let Sarah talk.
Sarah curled onto the couch, watching a golden evening outside her house with no desire to go be part of it.
"I met someone," Sarah said, and into Jill's startled response, "And we broke up."
There was silence for a second, then Jill said cautiously, "You work really fast. Or you've been holding out. Because I just saw you Friday night."
Sarah played things close to the chest. It wasn't anything she'd learned in her family, where her parents protected her from things she didn't need to worry about but talked to her as if she were a rational adult about things she did need to know about, like when her father quit his job at the college to go teach at a neighboring high school and there was going to be less money for a while but for the first time in years he was excited about what he was going to be doing.
It was just Sarah. The way she was. She kept things to herself, and having done so, she either celebrated them until she was willing to share, as if each celebration was somehow a gift, asking other people to share in her joy, or she worried them to death when they weren't positive events, worrying by herself until she finally told someone and discovered, nine times out of ten, that what she'd been worrying about was fixable or unimportant or just plain she had her facts wrong.
But this was Jill. And even if it was already over with Matthew, Jill would be happy for her.
"I met him at the ball."
A sharp intake of breath cut her off. Then Jill said, slowly, "Oh. My. God. Matthew Brody?"
"You know him?" Of course she knew him. Sarah herself should have known him, but she kept to herself as well as she kept her emotions and thoughts secret. She didn't spend much time on base when she wasnât workingâit had taken an order from an admiral to get Cinderella to the ball.
"He's a close friend of Stu's. They used to work out all the time until he ended up on another team."
Why is he on another team? But that wasn't the important part. "He's so good looking. He's soâ"
Jill just waited.
"He's handsome. He's so tall and lean and rugged and hard and those fantastic arms and amazing legs and he runs, ohmygod, he runs so fast, we were running together â "
Jill, dryly: "You went running on a date?"
"No," and she felt the excitement building, as if they weren't finished already, as if this were the talk she wanted to have with her best friend, all about the guy she'd met. "I was running. I met him at the ball. Come to think of it, why haven't I ever met him before, if he's a friend of Stu's? I've come to your barbecues!"
But she remembered they were already over, all over before it even began.
