Chapter 11
Here, There or Where?
The following morning, when Marcus still hadnât appeared for breakfast, Tatiana banged loudly on his door. âYouâve got to get up, Marcus â now.â
âI canât.â
âWhy not? Are you sick?â she asked, prodding the mound under the duvet.
âNo. I had a nightmare and Iâm exhausted!â he said, burrowing deeper under the quilt.
âOh, just a dream.â
âIt wasnât just a dream, it was important.â
âOkay, so an important one, but we have to go to the country soon, so youâd better get up,â she said, going to the door.
âNo, stop,â he called. âWe have to go back to the Catacombs today â I dreamt the children hadnât gone.â
Tatiana swivelled, hands on hips. âGrand-père and Mum have arranged the trip for today, and he hates having his plans altered, so get dressed. Weâll see about the children tomorrow.â
âBut we mustââ
âMarcus, after two hundred years of being stuck, one more day isnât going to make any difference,â she snapped.
âTati, whatâs the matter?â
âNothing.â
âThere is,â he said, emerging from under the bedclothes. âI can tell, youâre all spiky.â
âNo Iâm not. Iâm fine.â
âCome off it, Tati, you know youâre not,â he said, in a gentler tone.
âI told them about Granny and the tie,â she said, kicking at a trainer lying on the floor. âI should have kept my mouth shut because now Grand-pèreâs gone ominously quiet, Mumâs mad at me, and youâre making it worse by not getting up, and it seems thatâs my fault too!â
Marcus noticed her brimming eyes. âWhy didnât you say so before, instead of spitting at me?â
âWhatâs the point? It was my fault.â
âNo it wasnât, I would have done the same.â
âGrand-père didnât say anything, but his jaw was tightly clenched and he looked so mournful. Mum was furious that Iâd upset him, said it was bad for his heart and might make him ill again.â
âDonât worry, itâll blow over.â
âBut Mum accused me of making things up, lying. She said I was fantasising, that it was all in my mind,â she said, biting her lip.
Marcus swung his legs out of bed and taking Tatiana in his arms, gave her a quick hug.
âForget it, Tati.â
âHurry and get dressed then ⦠and I canât wait to hear about your nightmare. I really mean it,â she murmured, giving his shoulder an encouraging squeeze.
Marcus beamed. âGive me two minutes and Iâll be readyâ
