Chapter Ten

I felt Solas’ eyes on me every day. They felt like they added an invisible weight that I lugged around on my shoulders. A week passed, and he watched me like I was made of precious jewels or toxic waste. I don’t think he knew which one I was. I didn’t mind. If he was too busy watching me, he was too busy to destroy the Gate. When I didn’t see Solas, I saw Zephyr. He, like Solas, didn’t trust that I wouldn’t be lighting fires. Both had different reasons to worry. I didn’t blame either of them. I wasn’t exactly trustworthy anymore. It was almost amusing in some perverse way, where I had ended up and with whom. The three of us, the deadliest in Elphame and also the least trustworthy, were all stuck within the same walls, each holding secrets that could take the life of the other. We held unbelievable amounts of power, yet neither of us could save the other without risking the third. We were stronger together, but each other’s greatest weaknesses.

Rather than worry about their prying eyes, I planned my garden and dug them six feet deep, a statement for Solas to see. It was not lost on him. He watched from his balcony as I measured out a plot exactly his size. I planted flowers, all toxic and deadly, just as I planned how I would bring him to his knees if forced to. Sure, the destruction of the Dark Courts would be equally as satisfying, but Solas was the one who needed to be stopped. To not stop him meant my people would die. It wasn’t a difficult decision to make. Solas plotted and schemed behind closed doors, and each time he stepped into his office, he brought my people one day closer to death.

I could forgive the calculating and conniving ways that were who Solas was. I could even forgive his plot to bring me to his court. He had made no promises to me before he had offered me his hand in that cave and safety within his land. But what he had done once I got here, once I accepted his protection and gave him my love, I couldn’t forgive. What burned me, what truly shook me to my core, was that the man I loved would be the one who brought the entirety of Elphame to the door of the mortal world. Sure, it may not be his choice, but he’d still be the one knocking on the doors of Whitwick.

“Your garden is looking”—Solas stood close enough for me to feel the heat from his body. I turned with a smile to see his face twisted into discomfort—“really, interesting.”

“I’d like to plan a party once this is finished.” I turned back to my flowers. “You’ve not yet held a ball, and I think it would be nice. I would rather enjoy, very much, for your people to see just how far you’ve fallen, oh great king of ours.
