“I STILL can’t believe you talked me into this,” Michaels said, even though he wasn’t entirely angry.

“Sure you can. You just hate that I was right.” Sozio smiled back while performing yet another palm grab of Michaels’s head. “And it’s only gonna get—hold on… okay. But yeah, you won’t ever forget this night!”

“I’ll take your word for it, Soze.” Looking down at Sozio’s hand, Michaels thought it would be prudent to address the distraction he was holding. “Maybe you should answer that. It’s the third time you’ve sent it to voice mail.”

“Don’t worry. I know who it is. They’re just looking for me, even though I already told them I was doing this today,” Sozio said in a deadpan manner.

Michaels didn’t mind him not elaborating because he was too busy taking everything in. They were riding in the spacious duty van belonging to the base headquarters, driving down Pacific Coast Highway toward San Diego along with five other Marines. The two had taken the backseat out of instinct to make room for the others waiting to get inside the vehicle, and it was only coincidental that they focused solely on each other.

“Man, this is really happening!”

“Say what?” Sozio asked. Michaels was glued to the window, with a large smile, completely unaware of the question. “Yo…. Mike?”

“Huh? S-sorry, it just hit me is all, this whole day.”

“You act like you’ve never been to a football game, bud.”

This caused him to turn from the window, giving Sozio an effusive face. “As you keep reminding me, Soze, I’m only twenty and kind of studious. There are a lot of things I haven’t done yet!”

“Okay, Mike,” he said, patting his shoulder. “I forget sometimes, I guess. Still, if you like football so much, we can go to more games.”

“Let’s not be ridiculous here, Soze. Even I think that’s stretching it a bit!” Placing his hand on the window, Michaels leaned in a little, as if he could get closer to the panorama. “I’m not sure how you see this, but I’m driving down Southern California to a football game where I’m gonna be in the halftime show wearing my uniform. I think this officially qualifies as a big deal.”

“Damn, when you put it like that…,” the driver chimed in.

Looking up, Michaels could see the one Marine in the passenger seat up front and the others in front of them staring back with agreement in their eyes.

Thinking it over, Sozio also found their current assignment one of the more pleasurable ones. While some may not have enjoyed wearing their service uniforms, both he and Michaels never felt more comfortable in them. Out of the desert and in much more reasonable weather, they all wore their C variant, which was suitable because of the short-sleeve dress shirt and soft garrison cover with its creased, wedge-shaped crown. Sozio had been to San Diego multiple times since being stationed on the West Coast but sometimes forgot that Michaels had only been here a few months. Without a vehicle Michaels was severely limited in what he could experience in the great state of California.
