Chapter 14

“Debra, the boys are home.”

“You’re so funny, Mom.”

“All right, the men are home.”

Debra put aside her letter to Julie and stood up. “I’m sure Grant, at least, would appreciate being referred to as a man.”

She went downstairs and greeted her father, Grant, and Michael as they came in.

“You should have been there, Debra,” Henry said. “They pulled it out at the last minute. Mike passed to Jason, and Jason passed to Grant, and Grant just drove right in for a lay-up.” He pulled three cartons of ice cream from the freezer and set them on the kitchen table.

“It was awesome,” Grant agreed, taking bowls from the cupboard. His damp hair clung to his forehead. “We really had teamwork tonight, right, Mike?”

Michael leaned against the counter, smiling. “Yeah. We did it right tonight.”

Debra tried not to stare at him, snatching glances now and then. The casual Michael, in khaki slacks and a black pullover, was very distracting. His hair wasn’t as disciplined as usual, sticking up boyishly in the back. She was glad Belinda wasn’t there, whispering, “He is too cute!”

“So, who are you playing next week?” she asked, opening a drawer for spoons.

“Nobody, we just practice next week,” Grant said. “But the week after, we’re playing Clinton Baptist, and they have a really good team.”

“You ought to go, Debbie,” Henry said.

“Maybe I’ll wait until they’re facing another team they have a chance to beat.”

“You’re cruel.” Grant heaped his bowl with rocky road ice cream, and put just a dab of cherry vanilla on the side.

Ellen opened a plastic box of cookies. “There are a few of Debra’s cookies left. I don’t suppose you boys would eat them?”

Debra gave her a pointed look.

“Men,” said her mother hastily. “Men love chocolate chip cookies, right?”

Debra smiled and shook her head. “What will you have, Michael?”

“Definitely a cookie.”

“What kind of ice cream? Rocky road, cherry vanilla, or coffee?”

“Is it decaf?” he asked with a grin.

“No, it’s high-test.”

“Cherry vanilla, I guess.”

She fixed his dish for him, and they all sat down in the kitchen. Grant continued giving the highlights of the game between bites, until he scraped the bottom of his bowl.

“Better get ready for bed, son,” Henry said.

“Okay, but I need to show Mike the specs for the science fair.”

“All right, but make it snappy.”

“I took my shower at the gym, Dad.”

“I know. Go get your stuff.”

Grant bounded out of the kitchen.

“I apologize, Mike, I’ve tried to remind Grant to address you properly—”

“It’s all right, Mr. Griffin,” Michael assured him. “I don’t mind if the boys call me Mike. I’m not that old, and I think there’s some good in a boy being on a first-name basis with a police officer.”

“You’ve got a point there.” Henry stood up and reached for Ellen’s empty dish, taking it with his to the sink.

“More ice cream?” Debra asked.

“No, I’m stuffed.” Michael surrendered his bowl to her.

“So, what’s the science fair thing?” she asked, rinsing all the bowls.

“Well, Grant has an interest in ballistics, and I told him I’d get him some research material, if your parents don’t mind him going in this direction.
