“You gotta be fucking kidding me! Not one of you heard the alarm?”

Even Major Winters’ shouting the next morning at 4:55 a.m., combined with the aforementioned wakeup alarm blaring through the bay, wasn’t enough to pull three pixies from their deep slumber. That made him angrier, so he stormed into the bay and headed for Domino, who was curled up in his Army-issue blankets.

“On your feet, soldier! This is not a drill!”

Domino’s mouth popped open, and a snore emerged. The other two pixies didn’t stir.

Fuming already, Winters grabbed the edges of Domino’s bedsheets and tugged them with both hands. Sheet, blanket, pillow, and pixie toppled over the edge of the bunk and landed heavily on the floor. The major started to step back, but Domino was faster.

Startled out of his sleep by thumping onto the bay floor, the pixie let out a furious shout and rolled onto his hands and knees, then lashed out and swept both of Winters’ feet out from under him.

The major hit the floor, and the bay was quiet again.

Then Major Winters groaned and rolled off his tailbone.

That was all it took to wake the other two pixies.

Z growled, “Let me at him. I’ll rip his fucking head off!”

Echo used her magical speed and jerked the bedding off her bunk. In seconds, Winters was wrapped in sheets and fighting to get out like a small animal trapped in a burlap sack.

“Who is it?” Z asked as she leapt out of bed. “What is it?”

“Um…” Domino scratched the side of his head, blinked wearily, and yawned. “I think it’s Major Winters.”

“Ya think?” Winters’ muffled voice came through the bedsheet Echo had firmly wrapped around him. “I swear by every unholy curse, if y’all don’t get this sheet off me right now—”

“Major Winters?” Z asked groggily. “Is that you?”

The major stopped struggling. “I should’ve put in for a raise before I started this program.”

“If it’s you,” Domino called, cupping both hands around his mouth despite being three feet from the Winters-shaped mummy, “blink twice. Wait. Never mind.”

“Just say, ‘It’s me,’” Z added helpfully.

The major growled, “It’s me.”

Domino glanced at his sister, then narrowed his eyes at the bedsheet. “Me who?”

The mummy didn’t offer a reply, but it did start to tremble and emitted a furious huff every few seconds.

Z took a step back. “Yeah, okay. Echo? Maybe you should ease up.”

The goth frowned and shook her head.

“Well, it’s either our boss or a bomb. You decide.”

“Ooh.” Domino grinned. “Maybe it’s both.”

“That’s what I was going for, yeah.”

That bit of crosstalk was enough of a distraction to loosen Echo’s hold on the sheets. Major Winters took advantage of it with a violent swing of his arms and a furious roar. The sheets were ripped out of Echo’s hands, and the major flapped around on the floor for a good five seconds before he freed himself.

The second the sheet dropped away from his face, Winters sucked in a breath, tossed the rest of the fabric aside, and climbed to his feet in record time.
