“Hey, you seen this?”

Nick placed the teddy bear back on the gift shop shelf and quickly checked out the rest of the store. Souvenirs weren’t really his thing, but Cameron had convinced him to come in with the promise of treating him to a mug of hot chocolate from the café. Nick crossed the store to stand behind Cameron and peer over his shoulder.

On a large notice board was an array of flyers. The poster Cameron had taken an interest in was for another escape-room experience.

With a snort, Nick said, “I don’t think so. One escape is plenty.”

“But it’s a Western saloon!” Cameron cast Nick a sideways look. “Okay, maybe not.” He checked around. “Think I’m going to see if there’s something tacky to get your sister.”

“Knock yourself out.” Nick turned back to the board of pinned brochures and advertisements. Scanning them, his attention was drawn to the image of a hot-air balloon.

On the other side of the store, Cameron was picking up various items, turning them over in his hand, then replacing them, seemingly unsatisfied by their level of tackiness.

Nick smiled and picked up one of the leaflets for the hot-air balloon experience from the shelf beneath the board. Skimming the text, he eyed the digits on the back of the flyer. The flyer advised bookings be made well in advance as slots filled up quickly.

“What are the chances?” He looked back at Cameron. They’d made a deal to do what Nick wanted, and he couldn’t shake the idea. Pulling out his cell phone, he headed for the door. “I just need to make a call.”

He didn’t hear Cameron’s reply properly because the exit door creaked when he opened it and again when he let it swing shut after him. He tapped digits into the phone and waited.

A woman answered. “Hello, this is Full of Hot Air Rides. May I help you?”

“Hi,” he said. “I know this is a long shot, but I’m only in town for the night. Do you have a slot available to fly tomorrow morning?” Mentally he crossed his fingers and waited.

“You’re in luck. Our booking cancelled for tomorrow.”

“Seriously?”

“The threat of snow dissuaded them from venturing this way. I have to warn you that depending on weather conditions, it may be us doing the cancelling this time.” She already sounded apologetic. “I would suggest calling to check if things are going ahead. I’ll give you the details of your pilot. You can contact him before heading out.”

“No, that’s great.”

The woman rattled off details; what time sunrise was, when and where they would be picked up, what to wear, who their pilot would be, and how to make payment.

Nick repeated the information back to her. The creak of the gift shop door made him turn around. He raised a hand, indicating the call was almost over.

“Tomorrow about six. Thank you,” he said and hung up.

Cameron stepped down off the wooden porch. “Kaitlin?”

“No. I was arranging something for tomorrow morning.”

“What kind of something?”

Nick pursed his lips. “It’s a surprise.
