"Just shut up and help me get my watch."
Luke grabbed her wrist. "Say please."
Catherine froze. She knew he was teasing, but there was a look in his eyes that made her weak in the knees.
"Please?"
He moved closer. "Now, darlin', I think I heard a question in that word. You want to clarify your sweet needs for me?"
She could feel the heat of his body as he took a step closer. Her mind was spinning. Sweet needs? Lord have mercy. She'd thought Texans were talkers. She took a deep breath, then got lost in his gaze.
"Catherine ... I'm waiting."
She exhaled slowly. "Me, too."
The game had gone too far. He stuck his gun in the back waistband of his jeans and then took her by the arms.
Her head tilted, as if waiting for his kiss. The last thing she saw was his face, coming closer-closer. She closed her eyes. The waiting was over.
His mouth came down hard upon her lips, then instantly softened. His arms encircled her waist, pulling her close against his body. When she moaned, he lifted his head, a questioning look on his face.
Catherine locked her hands behind his neck.
Grannie, do you believe in love at first sight?
"Yes ... please," she said.
He picked her up in his arms and started toward the house.
The woods had grown silent; the air barely stirred. The faint smell of damp earth and new grass blended with the scent of warm bodies and the thunder of fast-beating hearts. Catherine was afraid, yet, at the same time, certain that this was right. Luke was a strong man--a good man. She laid her head against his shoulder and flattened the palm of her hand against his chest. His heartbeat was steady, unlike hers.
Moments later, he kicked the front door shut and then stopped, looking first at his sleeping bag, then up the stairs to the loft.
"The bed," she said softly. "And I'll walk."
He put her down, then cupped her face, unwilling to turn loose of her. This time his kisses were sweet, gentle nips--tasting first of her lower lip, then her upper, then the edge of her chin. Catherine swayed. Luke took her by the hand and led her toward the sleeping bag instead.
"Too damned far," he said softly, pointing toward the loft with his chin.
Her legs were trembling so much now that she was forced to agree. When her feet touched the downfilled comforter, she jerked as if she'd been burned. Luke stopped, searching her face for signs of regret.
"Are you okay with this?"
Her eyes felt heavy, her skin hot to the touch. She touched the side of his face, then his mouth, tracing the shape with her fingers.
"I may never be okay again."
A slight frown appeared between his eyebrows. "Are you afraid?" When she hesitated, a soft moan slid up and out of his throat. "Darlin' ... the last thing I want is for you to be afraid of me. Just say the word now and this is over."
Instead of an answer, she knelt on the sleeping bag and then held out her hand.
