Troy tried to talk her out of it. On the entire drive to the Circle C to pick up her stuff, he alternated between arguing, cajoling and demanding that she forget about Brideâs Price.
Her brothers werenât at the ranch house when they pulled up. Ally suggested Troy wait in his truck, but he ignored her, still arguing as he trailed her into the house.
âYou canât be serious,â he stated, following her so closely up the stairs to her bedroom that he bumped her a couple of times. âWhat does Brideâs Price have that Kauai doesnât?â
Ally stopped in her bedroom doorway to face him. âPrivacy,â she said. Then shut the door in his face and locked it.
She quickly changed into work clothesâcutoff shorts and a plain blue T-shirtâand gathered her hair into a ponytail. Then she picked up one of the boxes sheâd started packing weeks ago after her argument with Cole, opened the doorâand bumped into Troy. Again.
He was leaning against the jamb, his arms crossed over his wide chest, his hands tucked beneath his armpits, blocking her path. Sheâd thought changing out of her dress would put things back to normal, ease her unsettled feeling and douse the possessive spark in his green eyes. It didnât.
His gaze swept over her as he blocked her path, from the top of her ponytail down to her feet in her flat espadrilles, and the spark flared higher. âYou look great,â he said huskily.
Allyâs stomach swooped. But before she could reply, Troy started nagging her again. âInstead of going to stay at Brideâs Price, if youâre really dead set against going away for our honeymoon, why donât we stay at my ranch house?â he asked coaxingly. âItâd be more fun.â
âYour grandfatherâs ranch house, you mean,â Ally retorted, shoving the box into his arms before turning around to grab another filled with clothes. Heading down the stairs with her growling, glowering shadow limping behind her, she added over her shoulder, âThereâs no way Iâm ever going to stay with Old Mick. You can count on that.â
âFine, then we can go stay at my apartment in Dallas. Itâs a great place.â
âGoody for you.â She grabbed her hat off the peg by the door and slapped it on as they headed outside into the now waning sunshine. With Troy still dogging her heels, she strode across the porch and yard to drop her box in the bed of his truck, then turned to confront him. âWhy would I want to go thereâwhen I have a perfectly good home of my own?â
âWhat about supplies?â he demanded. âWhat about groceriesââ
âGot them. I stocked up last time I went over.â
That didnât stop him from arguing. Nothing stopped him. He kept trying to change her mind as they drove to the OâMalley spread so he could get his gear, too. They were nearly at the Running M when she finally managed to interrupt.
âLook, just because Iâm going to Brideâs Price doesnât mean you have to go, too. Cole will never
