HUNTER

A FEW WEEKS LATER

“Have you seen this morning’s headline?”

I peered at her over my tablet and tried not to get turned on at the sight of her tits sporting the weights I’d placed on them after a shower this morning.

They were screwed on, which seemed antiquated and medieval, but her eyes had lit up when I’d showed her and her pupils had dilated with every turn of the screw.

“My eyes are up here, Hunter,” she teased, and for all that she sounded jovial and was wearing no clothes, I knew Aurora, the businesswoman, was sitting at the head of the table, not Aurora, my sub.

That I got to see both sides of her was an honor, but I didn’t mention that, just locked my eyes on hers. “No. I haven’t checked the news. I’m working on my AI program that will identify card counters more accurately.”

“For fun?”

“Yeah.” I grinned at her, amused when she grinned back. I liked that. The businesswoman might be sitting opposite me but she was changing. Slowly. Surely. But they were steps in the right direction. Whether those steps were a foot long or four inches, I’d take each and every one. “Okay, so what’s the headline?”

She lifted her own tablet in a silent prompt and I frowned at the screen. “That’s in Mandarin.”

“Cantonese, actually.”

“Since when do you read Cantonese? And since when do you check out Cantonese headlines?”

“I read a lot of different papers and the Chinese government doesn't tend to censor Cantonese,” she admitted.

“What’s interesting about this one?”

“One of the Vice Chairmen of the Chinese Community Party’s National Security Commission was found dead in his apartment. Overdose. 'Ke Jintao was discovered in a girlfriend’s apartment,'” she quoted from the article. “And when I say girlfriend, I mean mistress.”

“So?”

Her nose crinkled. “You don’t think that’s odd?”

“I don’t know enough about the PRC to say.”

“Someone so high-ranking wouldn’t just be ‘found’ like that. It would be covered up. Not with drugs in his veins and beneath the roof of a property not belonging to him, his wife, or someone in his family.”

“Wouldn’t they have buried the story if it’s suspicious?”

“This is a paper based in Hong Kong. Some of the truth filters out of China and through these articles. It’s why I subscribe to it.”

“Does the Cosa Nostra have business in China?” I queried, still uncertain why this interested her so much.

“We helped the Triads earlier this year,” she said dismissively. “Gained back some territory as a result. I keep an eye on my enemies. Especially ones who are still ordered around by the base back home.”

I pondered that. “Meaning you keep an eye on Russia too?”

She nodded, her lips pursing.

I wanted to kiss her.

Did she know that?

I always wanted her mouth on mine. This goddamn rule was starting to inhibit how often I could taste her.

You have to earn my kisses?

What had I been thinking?

The tight look had me forcing myself to concentrate. “Any news from Moscow?”

“The new Pakhan in New York isn’t as popular at home as he is over here.
