CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Olivia sipped her drink and stared at the children who had gathered in a circle and one of the chefs was regaling them with the tales of Ananse as they clapped and laughed. She had been going over the events of the day with Jake.

“What’s on your mind, girl?” Claire asked as she sipped her drink.

They both worked at the government hospital and Claire came around on her days off.

“Nothing.” Olivia replied too quickly. Claire arched an eyebrow.

“Nothing? You look exhausted.” She said and then her eyes widened. “Wait, is it because of that man?”

Olivia rolled her eyes. “Come on, Claire, I just met him, plus you know the court issue. He can’t be a good man.”

Claire shook her head and seemed to be lost in thought. Olivia hated it when Claire did that. She knew her friend wanted to say something to her, and whatever she was going to say she wouldn’t like it.

“Spit it out.” Olivia said, turning to meet Claire’s gaze.

“I think you’re intentionally doing this to yourself.”

“Doing what?” Olivia said, feigning surprise.

“Really? You’re going to pretend as if you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

“Nope.” Olivia said, a mocking smile on her face. Claire blew a breath and that was a sign she was getting pissed.

“Why are you not giving anyone a chance?”

“Why should I?”

“You can’t live like that, Olivia. There is still someone out there for you.”

“There is no one.” Olivia said. She felt a headache coming on. This was a conversation she never enjoyed yet Claire always seemed to want to bring it up. Olivia knew why Claire did it. She loved her but she just was not ready for any attachment again.

“You should really–”

A scream tore through the atmosphere as one of the children fell and began to convulse. Olivia run towards the children and saw Susan, one of the children on the floor writhing. Conversation momentarily forgotten, Olivia held Susan and looked towards the children who were scared and yet they tried crowding around. She saw the panicked look on Claire’s face.

“Get inside everyone.” Olivia said, “we need to get to the hospital.”

Even as Olivia contemplated getting Susan to the hospital, her mind landed on Jake. She needed to call him. She fished her phone, patted Susan who slept on her lap at the backseat as Claire Bennet drove them towards the government hospital.

Inside her heart, she was so afraid. She didn’t want to lose Susan. She dialed Jake’s number and out of panic she cut the call. What was she thinking? He was nothing to her so why would she even think of calling him. Olivia couldn’t allow a momentarily lapse of weakness in her life. It had been so long.

Olivia wiped the tears prickling in her eyes.

“Is she okay?” Claire asked, their eyes meeting in the rearview mirror. “She will be fine, Olivia.”

She simply nodded. She saw Jake calling back but didn’t pick. They reached the hospital as she carried Susan in her arms to the emergency ward. Olivia
