The lab was a short walk and an elevator ride down to the basement level, but it afforded Elian countless minutes to ponder the oddity of the agent. His insides knew something was off, but his mind explained it as all the crazy things he had witnessed. He was certain he had to notify someone of the strange results he had found in blood labs and the coincidence of it occurring simultaneously with suspicious deaths in town. There are far too many unanswered questions. Elian tugged on his left ear forcefully as he eyed the agent stepping into the elevator beside him. The small space of the service elevator suddenly felt even more claustrophobic. The faint scent of sage and an incense he didn’t recognize wafted past him with Mr. Anniston standing so close.

“So, you have a particularly peculiar interest in werewolves.” Anniston spoke slowly over annunciating each word and dramatically reducing the pace of his speech as he turned fully in the tight elevator to face Elian. “I wonder, is it because Blackwood Forest has a reputation for wolf stories and folklore tales of beasts roaming the virgin woods surrounding the town?”

“Um, I…” Elian tried to speak, but the discomfort that had only been hinting at him up to that point, suddenly swelled up in his throat. “I guess?” Questioning his own words as they exited his mouth, he cracked an uneasy half-grin.

“Well, every town has its own dark past and secrets to hide.” Anniston’s faced brightened reducing the tension that had been building. “I’m sure Blackwood Forest is no different.”

The loud “ding” signaling their floor stole both men’s attention as the elevator doors scraped open. “After you.” Elian gestured his right hand out to the hallway before them. “It’s to the left.”

Nodding his thanks as he exited the elevator, Anniston walked purposefully to the left. “Have you any stories, other than your concerns you raised with our office, about Blackwood Forest and the,” shaking his body with exaggerated movements and widening his eyes he chuckled, “spooky monsters that live here?”

“I wouldn’t say ‘monsters.’” Elian smirked trying to shoo away the nervousness building within his chest. “But it’s hard not to hear the rumors in a small town.”

Walking up quickly to the lab door and swinging it open harder than he intended, Elian called out for Linda. Quickly flashing a glance up and down the small lab, he sighed. Relief washed over him. He wasn’t sure why he felt relief that Linda wasn’t there but the feeling was undeniable. “Sorry, it looks like Linda isn’t here right now.” He paused turning back to Anniston who stood statue-like at the entrance. “I guess she’s at…”

“Lunch.” Anniston interrupted. “I’m sure she is deserving of a break.” Tilting his head to one side to look past Elian slightly he bit down hard enough on the inside of his cheek that the skin near his nose twitched. “Did you say that you and Linda were the only ones to see the results of the blood labs?” Stepping closer to Dr.
