The crew celebrated our newfound freedom by throwing a party. Skylar showed up with her kids after school got out, and Zoey eventually wiggled free to go play. Melissa dragged me to the couch and, after changing into more comfortable clothes, Wyatt sat on my other side, a steady comfort, while I tried to get my thoughts straight. I watched with amusement as Wyatt vetoed the guys making a slide with cardboard on the stairs, or showing the kids how to use paintball guns. At one point, they started a game of tag, and Wyatt was forced to join because Zoey wouldn’t play with anyone else. He plopped her on his shoulders and followed half the crew outside for more space, grinning at me when I followed him outside to watch.

Zoey’s giggles made my chest warm, and I constantly had to remind myself that this was real. That she could smile and play like this every day. I leaned my shoulder against Melissa’s when she moved to stand beside me, my eyes locked on the game.

“See? I told you. Just a bunch of goofballs in leather vests.”

I snickered. She wasn’t wrong. They could be serious when they had to be, like Wyatt in court today, but when they all came together, they were more interested in relaxing and having fun.

When Wyatt got tagged and brought Zoey to the shade for a break, I turned to Melissa. “I wanted to thank you. None of this would’ve happened if you hadn’t agreed to take us in. You have no idea how much it means to me.”

She smiled, giving my shoulder a gentle squeeze. “You’re my friend, Maggie. I’ll always be there for you. But now the big question is, what are you going to do next?”

When I frowned, she gestured around her. “This place is great, and you look happy, but you don’t have to stay if you don’t want to. If you wanted to go home to Japan, you could. If you wanted to move to an entirely new city and start fresh, you could do that too. Selfishly, I want you to stay. I missed you. But whatever you choose, I want you to know I have your back. Always.”

Drawing in a slow breath, I thought about what she was saying. I had a choice now. What happened next was my choice. My eyes drifted to the group of grown men playing tag with a bunch of kids. While all the options had merit, there was only one that I wanted right now.

“I want to stay.”

She beamed at me, slinging her arm over my shoulder. “Thank god. I just got you back. I know I was being the bigger person, but I didn’t want you to go.”

I laughed, hugging her with one arm like we did in college. She was my closest friend once, and I was glad to have her back in my life. I was sad after we drifted apart.

“You can help me house hunt once I can afford to move.
