“C ommandant, there’s been a development.” Tibbits reported.

Commandant Meisenger sat forward, peering intently at the knight on video chat. That Tibbits had requested a video conference in lieu of the usual email already had him on edge. The knight’s opening statement set his nerves on fire. “What?”

“The hiking guide that Trent hired last winter,” a glance at notes, “Nona Hummel. She went to the garage Trent works at. She stayed overnight at Trent’s home and borrowed her vehicle to continue a roadtrip to Ohio.”

They were friendlier than Tibbits’ reports had led him to believe. “Why did she borrow Trent’s vehicle?”

“Apparently, sir, her own was in dangerously bad condition. I don’t think she knew that the garage she chose for repairs was where Trent worked, but it was obvious that she was pleased to see Trent.” Tibbits frowned. “Very pleased, sir. Her attraction to Trent is rather obvious.”

“Attraction?” He demanded, his mind furiously trying to draw up details from the reports he’d read almost a year ago. “Doesn’t Hummel have a child with an ex-husband?”“Yes, sir.”

His lips pressed together in confusion.

“Hummel’s sexuality doesn’t appear to discriminate between the sexes, sir.”

Dammit! This wasn’t good.

“And, sir. There’s something,” Tibbits swallowed. “Else.”

“What?”

The knight took a stuttering breath. Meisenger stared. Tibbits was never nervous, one of many traits that made her a successful spy. What could possibly make her nervous? “Hummel wears a black feather in her hair, sir.”

Ice streaked through his veins. “You’re certain?” He needed to be perfectly clear what Tibbits’ nervousness was implying.

“Absolutely, sir. It’s unmistakably Trent’s.”

The black-wing had broken the law. He would have to approach this carefully. Stealthily. Garrett couldn’t... Garrett. “There’s a possibility that Knight Garrett-Mansour is aware of Trent’s criminal behavior. We’ll have to arrest both. Separately. Quietly. Put teams together and in place within 48 hours, Knight Tibbits, but do not act until I give the order. And keep it silent. No one is to know who the targets are until it’s time to act.”

“Yes, sir.” Tibbits returned briskly. “And of Hummel and her child?”

“You’ll send a team to capture them as well. Keep them alive and have them confined until Trent and Garrett are in custody.”

“Sir.”

Meisenger ended the call and leaned back in his chair. Slowly, a satisfied grin sharpened his features, revealed his teeth. Having an ironclad reason to put Trent under lock and key was perfect. If the teams approached her correctly, she wouldn’t have a chance to put up a fight, though she might if she realized her slug was in danger. He may have to offer the black-wing a carrot. Seeing as there hadn’t been any rumors of angels or magic coming out of the mountains that Hummel called home, it appeared as though she was keeping Trent’s secret.

Hummel might be able to continue to keep that secret. Threaten the life of her child, and she certainly would. This could work. Promise Trent to allow the slug to live as long as she never breathed a word of lokref or looked for Trent, and Trent would do anything asked of her.
