In retrospect one might think that Röpke's decision was the correct one. Mises could have remained in Geneva, where he had spent some of the happiest years of his life and enjoyed ideal conditions for his scholarly work. For him personally, the U.S. move was a disaster. But what would the world of ideas and the world at large look like today had Mises remained in Europe? He might never have written in English. Human Action would not have seen the light of day, and thus would not have reached the group of brilliant students whom Mises inspired in the New York of the 1950s and 60s—those students who carry on his ideas to this day.
