After this he returned to the UK and his next posting was instructing senior officers at RAF College Cranwell in Lincolnshire in 1956–57. Tom’s last years of service took him to even higher levels when he became military secretary to Air Chief Marshal Sir George Mills and Admiral Denny at the British Embassy in Washington DC from 1957–62 as part of the British Joint Services Mission to Washington. The last posting of his career would bring him back to the UK once again, where he would serve in the corridors of power on this side of the ocean in the Ministry of Defence Planning Department in Whitehall from 1962–64. Tom Neil retired from the RAF in 1964 as a wing commander who had been decorated by both the UK and USA during his service, with the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar, Air Force Cross, Air Efficiency Award, and American Bronze Star. He had flown many combat missions in both of the famous British wartime fighters, the Hurricane and the Spitfire, and also the American fighters the P-38 Lightning, P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang among many others.

At the time of writing in 2017 there were fewer than twenty Battle of Britain pilots left in the UK from the original 3,000 of 1940, and from those Tom ‘Ginger’ Neil is one of the last ‘aces’ of that historical defence of our nation, so it was truly amazing to hear what he had to say:
