CHAPTER EIGHT
âSHE KNEW ABOUT US, didnât she?â Holly said after a while.
âMaybe. Most of the kids in high school knew we were dating. If they thought it important enough, they could have told their parents. We were trying to keep it from your father, not the world.â
Ty relived some of the frustration of their senior year. Heâd been so taken with pretty Holly Bennett heâd wanted to shout it from the mountains that she had chosen him. He now knew it was important he teach his son what his father had failed to get through to himâif someone wanted something kept quiet, there was probably a damn bad reason for it.
Half an hour later, Ty reheated some of the pizza. He could hear the shower running. Holly was still beneath the cascading water. Try as he might, he couldnât get a picture of her body slick with water out of his mind. Theyâd gone skinny-dipping onceâfeeling daring and risqué. Heâd seen that lithe body streaming with water in the moonlight. Heâd never forgotten.
The dinging of the microwave brought him back to reality. He took the plate out and seated himself at the table. In other circumstances heâd wait for his guest. But this was just his new hand, and he was not going to put more importance to her being here than was warranted.
Heâd almost finished his portion of the pizza by the time she came into the kitchen. Her dirty clothes were bundled and held away from her. Her hair was loose, still damp, and flowed over her shoulders like honey.
Ty forced his eyes away, clenching a hand to prevent himself from reaching out to touch that silky mane.
âDid you already eat?â she asked, spotting his plate.
âYeah, the rest is still in the box. Heat it up when youâre ready.â With luck, thereâd be some hot water left so he could shower and change.
Holly went to the back porch, where the ancient washing machine stood.
The phone rang. He reached for it from his seat.
âAlverez,â he answered, hoping it wasnât Maria calling about a problem with Billy.
âHi, Ty, Sara here. Weâre putting together an after-branding party tomorrow night. All the work is done and we have to celebrate. Can you and Holly come tomorrow night? We want everyone who participated to be at the party.â
âI canât speak for her, but Iâll be there. Billy, too?â
âOf course. Is Holly there? Iâll ask her myself if you wonât.â
He looked at the back door just as Holly reentered. âIâll ask her.â Ty held the receiver away from his head. âSara wants to know if youâll attend a party theyâre having tomorrow night. An after-branding celebration.â
She smiled and nodded. âSure. May I speak to her?â She took the phone and began to talk. He rose and took his plate to the sink, rinsing it and leaving it. Heading for the bathroom, he ignored the chatter behind him. Ty needed to get away from the beguiling woman who dominated his thoughts and now dominated his own home.
