CHAPTER EIGHT

TWO nights later, Regina lay in bed staring at the ceiling, the memory of Dell walking toward

her saying “She’s most definitely mine,” in a continuous replay, and every time that deep

baritone sounded in her memory, she shivered with awareness. Her husband was a very

commanding, very physical man. He had ridden to her rescue no questions asked when Belle had

called.

For the moment it didn’t even matter that he considered her an obligation, a bit of family duty.

At least, she wasn’t going to let it matter.

Dell had saved her skin. What’s more, he had most likely saved Edna’s. She knew because she’d

received a phone call from Edna today.

“Guess where I am?” Edna had asked. “I’m on the street, talking into my bodyguard’s cell

phone. Isn’t that a hoot?” she asked with a trill of laughter. “Me, Edna Dooney, with her very

own personal bodyguard to keep the Bodies away. Doesn’t talk much, but he’s sure handy at

carrying things and frowning. You tell your man thank you, all right? You sure got lucky, girl.”

“Yes, I sure got lucky,” Regina whispered in the dark. Dell was rock solid, a good man. He had

helped her so much.

And what had she done for him? Other than bringing him his mail one day and giving Lee

enough confidence to disappear off on his own personal quest?

“Not a thing,” she muttered. “What could I do for someone like Dell?” She’d been mulling over

that question for two days. And she had no answer other than the subliminal Sleep with him that

kept creeping into her thoughts.

“Just stop it!” She moaned, turning over. “That’s not the way I want things to work.” If they ever

did sleep together, it had to be because they both wanted it and the time was right. What she

wanted to do for Dell had to be different. Out of the ordinary.

She threw off the covers and paced the room. Flipping on her computer, she pulled up one of the

few pictures she’d taken of Dell. He was turned to the side, his jawline a blade. The photo had

been taken back when she’d been dating Lee, and Dell had been happy then. Less tense. He was

smiling at something in the distance. He was…impressive, very aristocratic, very Boston.

Regina frowned at that. She clicked onto the Internet and typed Dell’s name and the word

Chicago into the search engine. One small page came up, the same passage she had mentioned to

him that day she had asked for the divorce.

She typed in jewelry stores and Chicago and a host of them came up. Obviously Chicago was a

competitive market. Despite the fact that there were those who wanted him to set up shop in the

town, expanding there could still be a risk. A new enterprise would need to stand out from the

crowd. A major public relations push would be necessary.

“Which Dell knows and which he can well afford,” she whispered. No doubt he had the best

agencies available at the task right now.

But they don’t know him personally. They don’t know what makes him tick, what makes him

stand out as a man and what makes him interesting.
