Twenty-One

SINCE HIS HEARTFELT apology, James was the perfect husband, and Francesca told herself no one needed to know about “the incident,” and she told no one. It was a one-off, Francesca reasoned that had to be glossed over since she’d instigated it with her refusal to let go of Tommy. A marriage between two people and the ghost of a past lover did not make for a successful marriage. Regardless of how Francesca felt for James, he was her husband now, and he’d have to be the only man in her life. She had to put Tommy and their memories out of her mind. She had to focus on James if her marriage was to survive. And the moment they returned from their honeymoon, Francesca sank into her work. There were depositions to take, meetings to attend, and a stack of calls to return. Francesca had Jennifer book back to back appointments with potential clients. Between work and home, Francesca barely had time to breathe. As she hoped, keeping her mind busy kept thoughts of Tommy at bay.

Francesca stopped making the monthly call to Veterans Affairs. She stopped writing government officials for help tracking Tommy down. Francesca shredded all logs of her calls and conversations with Veterans Affairs and the “We regret” letters she’d received over the past five years.

“From your husband, for your three month anniversary.” Jennifer breathed the scent of the red roses before setting them in the vase. “And these are your messages.” Jennifer set those on Francesca’s desk. “You’re a lucky one to have such a romantic, thoughtful man. Not to mention gorgeous and successful.”

Francesca set the law book she was scouring through on her desk. “I am lucky, aren’t I?”

“I need to find myself a James. Someone who sends me flowers just because. Someone who plans our nights, and willingly goes clothes shopping with me as your James does to help pick out the perfect outfit. I’m so tired of doing all those things for myself, by myself. I need a James Templeton III. God, even his name sounds sexy. Does he have a brother?”

“Sorry, he’s an only child.”

“A friend?” Jennifer poured water into the vase, rearranged the roses.

“I can ask, but have you met Bart Risk? The young, handsome grad we just brought on.”

Jennifer reached deep into her memory. “Is he the one with the green eyes and dark, shaggy hair?”

“That’s the one. He’s handsome, and rumor has it available. Better yet, I’ve seen the way he looks at you. There’s definite interest there.”

“Really? I never noticed it.”

“You never noticed him walking past your desk more than he should or eyeing you the entire time he does.” Jennifer shook her head. “That’s your problem. You’re too focused on your work. Not that I’m discouraging it, but you need to pay closer attention if you’re ever going to...”

“Reel one in.” Jennifer finished.

“Sure, that works.” Francesca rose, walked to the bar cart, and poured herself a glass of water.

“Hmm, Bart Risk. He is cute.” On further consideration, Jennifer said, “I think I will pursue the Bart Risk avenue.
