CHAPTER EIGHT

AFTER the events in the car, it took several minutes for Savannah to become more than peripherally aware of her elegant surroundings. Sandros had suggested dining in a restaurant connected to a five-star hotel and it showed. Fine linen, crystal and delicate china graced the table at which they sat. She had no doubt the food would be up to the same standards of excellence. Not that she cared.

After the scene in the car and the humiliatingly tortuous experience of being forced to sit so closely to Sandros , she had no appetite and even less desire for the ordeal to come.

Leiandroslaid a casual arm across the back of her chair, his fingers brushing her shoulder through the light silk of her over blouse. Did he have any idea the effect his touch had on her? Volts of electricity shot down her arm as his touch sparked something very different than the comfort he so clearly intended.

“Relax, pethi mou. All will be well.”

She took a deep breath and tried to obey him, but she was fighting both trepidation over the meeting to come and her body’s susceptibility to him. Under the cover of Sandros giving his order to the waiter, she asked, “How can you think so? They hate me. What hope is there for Nyssa and Eva?”

Almost black eyes burned into hers. “Your daughters are separate people. Their grandparents love them already just from their pictures. Imagine how besotted they will become when they meet your sweet-natured daughters in person.”

Which meant what exactly? That all his fine words in the car meant nothing and it did not matter if Dion’s family hated her guts as long as they could love Eva and Nyssa?

The waiter had turned to Leiandros, who requested a bottle of Greek wine and then proceeded to order for Savannah and himself with typical arrogance.

She had no opportunity to pursue her discussion with him before the waiter returned with their wine. Leiandros deferred tasting to Sandros and Savannah remembered Dion saying his father was something of an expert on wines, particularly those native to Greece. Sandros pronounced the wine acceptable and gave the waiter permission to pour.

As the waiter approached her, Leiandros asked, “Would you prefer a spritzer?”

She needed to keep her wits about her tonight. “Yes.”

“That’s enough,” he told the waiter when her glass was a third full. “Please bring us a club soda.”

“Are our Greek wines too strong for your palate?” Iona’s voice was heavy with derision and Savannah’s throat tightened.

Leiandrossighed. “I think it is time for me to call you a taxi, Iona. You refuse to be civil and clearly do not have the maturity to realize that your sniping is only making a difficult situation worse.”

Did he think sending Iona away would solve the basic problem?

Shockingly, Iona’s sarcastic mask crumbled and tears shimmered in her dark eyes. “I’m sorry.”

Leiandros’sexpression did not soften. “I told you what would happen in the car if you continued to bait Savannah.”

Iona turned her tear wet face toward her father.
