It was after midnight when Mary and I walked home from work. It was freezing, probably ten degrees at the most, so I had all the heavy gear on: parka, ski hat, gloves, scarf. But there was a full moon reflecting off the snow, and it was beautiful, so I didn’t mind that Mary was walking so slow.

People always say that when the moon is full in the winter, it’s just like daytime, because its reflection on the snow makes everything so bright white. But they’re wrong. It’s nothing like daytime. When it’s a full moon in the mountains, everything, especially the snow, is blue.

We dodged a few drunk tourists, probably stumbling home from an evening of vodka shots at the Sky Hotel. “Partee!” one of them yelled into the silent blue.

“What a loser,” I said. “Can you believe what a disaster Sylvia was tonight?”

“That poor girl,” Mary said. Then she snickered. Just a little. But I heard it.

We turned left and headed up the hill to Crawford Hall, which loomed in the blueness over Garmisch Street like a chaperone. It, too, was blue, a serious blue, square and asleep except for the lights that lined its walkway.

I pulled my ski cap down over my head. “Have you heard from Stephen today?” I asked.

“No,” she said. “I haven’t.” And that’s all she said.

I guess she didn’t want to talk about it. So I just walked next to her, as slowly as she wanted to, looking at the blue snow under my feet, cooking apple crumble in my head, and wondering why anyone would bother to fall in love.
