Harvey protested, but Erin knew I wasn’t kidding. She let me take her back into the library, to a restricted section in the back. This area was like the rest of the library, with tall shelves and lots of books, desks and chairs, but only professors and other assigned people had access to it.

I locked the door and turned to the side of the room with books about demons.

“What are we looking for?” Erin asked, following me.

“I want to know more about the demon who left that mark on you.” I picked a book with a list of demons by ranking. “That mark should have faded several weeks ago.” I grabbed several other books and took them all to the closest table. I pushed a couple to Erin. “Sit down and help me. Try to find something that resembles the mark on your wrist.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. I knew what was probably going through her mind. After that night at Chasseur Ville, I became distant again. What else could I do? I had saved her from the other demons, but who would save her from me? I had to keep myself as far from her as I could.

This, however, felt important enough to put that plan on pause. This fucking mark had to be gone before it caused more trouble.

“Okay,” she finally said, sitting down and turning the book to her.

For over an hour, Erin and I flipped through dozens, maybe hundreds of books. We found many marks and symbols, but none like the one on her wrist.

I slammed a book shut. “This is fucking ridiculous.”

“Maybe this isn’t anything to do with that demon,” she said, eyes on the book she was flipping through.

“What do you mean?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m just throwing ideas out there.”

Ideas … we needed ideas.

I stood up. “Come on.”

She dropped the book and frowned at me. “Where to now?”

“Right here.” I positioned myself in the middle of several desks. “I want you to try something.” It was a crazy idea, but it was the only one I had right now.

Reluctantly, Erin rose from her spot and walked to me. I grabbed her shoulders and pushed her two feet in front of me. “All right, don’t look at me like I’m crazy. Just turn your hand like this.” I put my hand between us, palm up. Brows hitched high, Erin mimicked me. “Now, try to do some magic.”

“What?”

“You’re looking at me as if I’m crazy.”

“Because that sounds completely crazy.”

“Just … indulge me.”

She sighed. “And how do I do magic?”

How would I explain this to her without her realizing I was speaking from experience? “Focus on your energy. Imagine magic being something alive inside you, like your blood. Urge it to obey you, to follow your wishes, to come to your hand, to your palm, and create a fire ball.”

“A fire ball?” She sounded more skeptical by the second.

“Please, Erin, just do this for me.”

She rolled her eyes, but then stared at her open palm, as if she was focusing and following what I had told her.
