Chapter Fifteen
It was Saturday evening; I plunked my suitcase on the bed, preparing to pack. Tomorrow morning I would leave on my quest to save Tobias and help him fulfill his unfinished business. Josh had come over throughout the week to check on my little car, making sure the oil and fluids were filled. Iâd just put brand new tires on it a couple of days ago, so theyâd be okay.
âLooks like youâre good to go, kid,â Josh had said as he slammed down the hood. âStill not sure why you have to be chasing your husband down. He should be here with his wife.â
I didnât say anything, just looked to the ground and nodded. Joshâs grudge against Aaron grew worse by the day.
Now I flung clothes onto the bed that I hadnât yet packed away for the move to my new home, holding up tanks and tees and deliberating what kind of weather New Mexico would throw at me. I was betting it would be sizzling hot, just like Charleston had been last summer. I draped Bobâs paw necklace over the mirror on my dresser. It still stung to look at it.
School was now a little less than a month away, and I hoped this token would be quick to find so I could be out of there.
Symphony came up to the bed and nudged up under my arm, wanting her usual pats on the head and ear scratches. Almost a week had passed since Bob died, and she seemed to be getting better, eating and drinking and getting up to face the day. But these losses had changed her. Between saying goodbye to both Tate and Bob, her need for attention consumed her. I hated the fact that Iâd have to leave her, and I contemplated taking her with me for the company. It would be good for both of us.
She stopped nuzzling me and her ears perked. This time, she felt him before I did. Tate was here standing beside the bed, the sight of his soft elegance rousing me with a thrilling jolt. Symphony went wild, tackling him and lavishing him with licks. She came alive.
My hand flew to my neckline, and I gasped. âOh, Tate, I
canât believe itâs you!â
I threw my arms around him. He was weak, getting thinner and more transparent. In a few places, namely hands and forearms, the patches of skin were so thin you could see through them, exposing the wall behind him. I pulled myself away, worried I might hurt him. He was fading fast.
He pulled me back for a kiss. âHi, Ladybug. Iâve missed you so much.â
âIâve missed you, too. Did I hurt you? I hate to say this, but you donât look good.â I bit my fingernail, laughing nervously.
âYou canât hurt me. But I am losing my power. Thatâs why I came here tonight. I knew you were leaving in the morning for New Mexico, and I wanted to tell you that Iâm too weak to help dig. Youâll have to do it alone.
