Chapter 13
Day 5
Morning came not with a bang, nor with a whimper, but a whisper. Light woke me as it streamed through the second story window where Ryan’s room was located. Midday at least. One of my arms wound around Ryan’s chest and the other rested in the crook between neck and pillow that God must have invented for just such a purpose. “I love you,” I whispered to Ryan’s sleeping body.
Hearing my voice, Cujo stood, stretched, and peered at me from the side of the bed but, seeing I was not getting up yet, laid back down and went to sleep. Other than the one group of Neighbors we ran into, the night before was anticlimactic. Ryan’s parents weren’t home and no horde of monsters took refuge in his basement. Even the doors remained locked and the windows unbroken. It appeared that we had made the right decision to come stay there.
I’d never held someone while I slept before. It was nice, like I dreamed it might be. Ryan smelled a bit, but then again so did I. Who cared? I wouldn’t choose to be anywhere else.
I knew that we had work to do: boarding up the house, collecting food and weapons, digging a moat and filling it with alligators...okay, well probably not that last one, but still, there was much that needed to be done. I didn’t want to get up and do anything though.
Instead I planned. Ryan’s house had become my home...our home for however long the world stayed shattered. Maybe forever. Really, once past the ugliness and pain of it all, the situation did have an appeal. What kid didn’t at one point dream of living on his own and not ever having to get a job? I knew a doctor in town who I would be visiting when we were settled and well armed. I always wanted a Ferrari, and likely his was still gassed up and waiting in the garage.
Mostly though, everything I ever wanted slept in my arms, and what I really planned for was how to give him the world. Maybe after a year or two we could move on together. We could pack our bags and head out towards California. Find some modern home overlooking the Ocean. Maybe we could just live on a sailboat and go around the world, living on dreams. Dreams and big, ocean fish.
Being excited while surrounded by tragedy felt like sin, especially with all I’d lost, but how could I not? Like I said, it may have taken the world ending, but I finally had everything I’d ever wanted. As I pictured myself a modern day Hemingway, my mind wandering through the Bahamas and deciding which key we were going to anchor our sailboat off of, Ryan woke.
“Morning,” I said.
Ryan turned towards me. “Morning.”
Cujo jumped onto the bed and crawled until he lay against my side. I petted him and said to Ryan, “How’d you sleep?”
“Good. How about you?”
I kissed his forehead. “Best ever.”
In return for my kiss Ryan punched me in the chest.
