Eve

* * *

“Breathe, Grace,” Eve said. “You know what to do.”

Grace shook her head so hard her entire body moved, sending coffee sloshing out of her cup.

“If worse comes to worst, just set the street on fire, and everyone will be too busy running for their lives to look at us,” Eve said.

“Not funny.” Grace glared at Eve.

“Got you to stop panicking.” Eve shrugged. “If everything goes really well, we won’t see them at all.”

Eve leaned back in her seat, watching the people passing by. She sipped her coffee slowly, the tension in her gut tightening as her drink grew cold.

The waiter came by to refill their cups. Eve slipped cash onto the table and smiled at the man.

Don’t you dare try and make me leave this table.

He eyed the cash, but didn’t take it. “I’ll be around in a few minutes in case you ladies need another refill.”

“Thanks,” Eve said.

“They should have been back by now.” Grace chewed on her bottom lip. “Something went wrong.”

“Or there was a line,” Eve said. “Or the registrar was on a coffee break. Or they had to fill out a stack of forms. They’re fine. They’ll be here.”

Grace stared down the street toward the CFH.

“Relax,” Eve said. “Panic kills plans.”

“Right.” Grace leaned back in her seat, sloshing coffee from her cup again.

A man with six dogs on leashes strolled past, heading toward the CFH. All the dogs turned their noses to sniff Eve, whining in her direction.

“Aw, come on guys.” The dog walker yanked on their leashes, dragging his charges past Eve. “Sorry about that.”

“No problem.” Eve smiled at the man, her hands curling into fists as the temptation to tear the leashes from his hand and set the dogs free surged through her.

“Oh no.” Grace whimpered.

Eve followed Grace’s gaze down the street.

Jerek ran toward them, blood streaked across his face and two guards gaining on him.

“Is that my blood?” Grace whispered.

“We can hope,” Eve said. “Just stay calm.”

Grace stood, taking a step away from the table and onto the sidewalk proper, keeping her eyes locked on Eve. “This is a terrible idea. I don’t know why we thought this would work.”

Jerek darted around the dogs and onto the road.

Eve’s heart leapt into her throat as a jeep barreled toward him.

He jumped back up onto the sidewalk as Eve rose to her feet.

Grace bit her lips together, waiting for the blow.

Jerek drove his shoulder into her side, knocking her to the ground. She fell between two tables, clutching a scroll with black rods to her chest.

“Watch it, asshole!” Grace rolled to her hands and knees.

Eve watched Grace slip the scroll under her shirt but couldn’t spare the time to help her to her feet.

The guards were too close to Jerek. They’d catch him before he could slip away.

“Are you okay?” Eve leaned down toward Grace and kicked back, hitting the underside of their table.

The table flipped over, smashing into one of the guards who tumbled into the path of his comrade. The table rolled sideways, knocking into the next table over.
