The cold metal of the horseshoe in Brenda’s hand was calming, and it helped to offset the sweatiness of her palms. She didn’t feel nervous, but her body was telling her otherwise. It was the final match, and she and Justin were only four points behind the top team, but with just a few throws left, Brenda wondered if it was even possible to catch them.

“I can’t believe we’re in second place,” Justin said.

“So, you really did expect me to come out here and be terrible at this then?” she teased.

Justin was turning another shoe over in his hands. “No! You’re pretty much good at everything you do, so I had all the faith in the world in you. You do have a broken arm, though, and I wouldn’t say I’m a fantastic horseshoe thrower.”

“Pitcher,” she corrected.

“Right.”

“You’re up!” she said, giving him a good luck pat on the butt.

She noticed how he shrugged his shoulders up and down a few times before each toss he was feeling nervous about, and it made her smile. She couldn’t wait to know all his little quirks. The more time they spent together, the worse Brenda started to feel about how many years she’d let pass because of her fear, and her insatiable desire to be in control of her life at all times. The funny thing was, the closer she grew to Justin, the less she noticed her precious control slipping away little by little.

Justin threw a ringer, and a leaner, tying them with the first-place team. Brenda took a deep breath as she stepped up to pitch. It had been ages since she’d played, and with having to throw lefthanded, Justin had definitely carried them this far. She just hoped she wouldn’t lose it for them at the finish line.

She squared her shoulders, puffed out her chest, then let out her breath and tossed her first shoe. She smiled when she heard the sweet sound of metal clinking on metal as the shoe hit the stake, and she let out a little whoop when she saw that it was a ringer. Now, if she could at least make it within six inches of the stake she’d get a point, and they would probably win.

Taking another deep breath, Brenda went through the same routine as she had the time before, and watched in anticipation as the horseshoe flew through the air. She heard the metal clink again, but this time, the shoe bounced off and landed in the sand around the stake. She turned to Justin and shot him a worried look, but he just smiled.

“Great toss, babe,” he assured her.

“Is it close enough?” she asked. She was too nervous to turn around and watch for herself as the judge pulled out his measuring tape.

“Too hard to tell from here,” Justin said. He came closer to her and rubbed her back.

The judge was Mr. McKenzie from the hardware store, so Brenda at least trusted his measuring abilities. “One point!” she finally heard him call.
