“Hey, shithead.” Ronnie Callahan kicked the bedroom door open. Paul could smell the whiskey from where he sat. He carefully put the charcoal stick into his desk and placed a notebook over his drawing.

“The garbage needs to go out.”

“It’s out, Dad. I put it out after dinner.”

“Then why are there newspapers in the living room? Tell me that, will you? Do it now.”

Paul got up slowly and moved towards the door.

“Now, goddammit. Now!” His father grabbed his arm and pulled him through the door, wrenching the elbow until Paul cried out. “Stop being such a baby.” He pushed his son towards the stairs, and Paul scrambled down as quickly as he could. “And bring in that case of Bud from the trunk.” He threw his car keys down the stairs, hitting Paul in the back.

Paul passed his mother on his way out with the newspapers. She sat at the kitchen table, staring into a cup of coffee. She didn’t look up at him.

Paul’s two brothers took the beatings until they were 16, then hit the streets; their sister, bullied and bruised, went to live with an aunt in Tacoma when she was 12. The last time Paul had seen her, she and her live-in girlfriend had spoken bitterly of men in general. Paul stayed through high school for his mother, but when he won a scholarship to the San Francisco Art Institute, he was gone too. By the time he left Kelso, he was already drinking some, but he saw it as recreation and he still did.
