Chapter Ten

Michael

As an apparently endless stream of people filed past us to the economy section of the plane, I sipped the free glass of champagne and stretched out my legs. “I’ve never been in first class before,” I murmured to Will, who was sitting next to me by the window.

“This is actually premium economy,” he said. “I bet the bastards in first have beds.”

In the window seat ahead of us, Angela turned around. “They do. But I didn’t get where I am by spending company money on beds in the sky.” Grinning, she sipped her champagne. “Good thing they had these empty spots or you’d be stuck back there.”

Will grinned. “Definitely not complaining! Thanks again.”

It really did seem luxurious to have two wider seats by the window instead of the usual three. There were only six rows of premium, and when I glanced back at the rest of the plane, it looked like a lot of people were crammed in.

Will was tapping on his phone, and Angela went back to hers, soon making a call and firing off orders in the friendliest way possible. Her family was flying from Texas and joining us in Perth in…two days?

We’d flown a quick hop from Albany to JFK, and now we were going to Hong Kong and then onto Perth after a layover. I was pretty sure that because we were crossing the dateline it would take us two days.

Not that it really mattered. It could take a week, and I’d be happy to spend it with Will. Not just with him, but as his boyfriend. My two days of fantasy had morphed into two weeks, and it was the greatest Christmas present ever.

Will snorted and showed me his phone screen. It was a text from Seth:

By the way, Angela is very big on mistletoe, so be prepared.

My mouth went dry, and I tried to think of a good joke. I leaned over and whispered right in Will’s ear given Angela was so close, though she was still talking on the phone. My lips brushed his skin.

“Maybe we should practice kissing after all.”

Oh, my GOD. I’d really just said that. Like, out loud. To Will. Of all the jokes, that was what my asshole brain coughed up? Awesome.

Will laughed and fiddled with his phone, not looking at me. I gulped the rest of my champagne in one mouthful and wondered if it was bad manners to ask for more. Maybe once we were up in the air. I scrolled through my phone restlessly, crossing my ankle over one knee and then the other. Then back again.

Shit, the plane hadn’t even left the ground, and we had almost sixteen hours to go. I needed to calm down. Everything was fine. Will had joked about practicing kissing, and I’d only been bringing up his joke.

My phone buzzed in my hand, and I eagerly read the text, desperate for a distraction. Zoe had written:

Glad you’re okay. You kind of freaked me out. So you and Jared are done?

I choked down my bitterness and hurt.
