CHAPTER THIRTEEN

LARKE

Ronan was a tornado, twisting me in circles.

From confusion to hate to lust to admiration to this budding crush. He’d left me reeling. And somehow, I liked his crazed, reckless spinning.

I liked Ronan.

Focusing on the television was pointless. I’d chosen The Incredibles on Disney because it was as entertaining for me as it was Wren.

Ronan chuckled at one of the jokes, drawing my attention.

I’d lost track of how many times I’d glanced his way from the corner of my eye. But this time, unlike my other chaste looks, his gaze was waiting.

Holy mother, he was hot. I couldn’t have dreamed of a more handsome man. And his confidence, that cavalier attitude, was incredibly sexy.

We stared, unabashedly, like two people trying to read each other’s thoughts.

Could he tell what I was thinking? Could he see my heart beat faster? Did he know how much I wanted another kiss?

There was as much desire in his hazel eyes as I felt thrumming through my veins.

Oh God. What was happening? It was getting dark outside and the glow from the setting sun was fading. The stubble on Ronan’s sharp jaw was more pronounced in the shadowed light. His lips looked fuller, softer. The sliver of skin beneath his throat where he’d left a couple buttons undone was nothing but a tease, tormenting me to see what he looked like without the shirt entirely.

Before I did something stupid, like beg him to stay, I stood from the couch and made my way toward the hallway.

My primary suite and Wren’s room were on the main floor. Upstairs were two other bedrooms, a bonus space and an office I rarely used. The air was cooler as I descended the hall and it had nothing to do with the house’s heating system. Whenever I was around Ronan, a fire blazed beneath my skin.

“What am I doing?” I murmured when I reached her room.

How long had it been since I’d felt this kind of attraction to a man? Never. Not even Hawaii.

My heart was pounding, so loud I feared it would wake Wren as I padded into her bedroom, stepping over the clothes she’d been wearing earlier. I’d been in such a hurry to get her in the bath and rush back to Ronan I hadn’t bothered putting them in the hamper.

“Good night, baby.” I kissed her forehead and laid her in her crib, standing by the railing for a long moment as she rolled to her tummy. Then when she was settled, I flipped on the sound machine and her nightlight before easing out of the room.

A wave of nerves hit as I lingered beside her closed door.

Wren had been a lovely buffer tonight. With her around, the tension between Ronan and me had been on simmer. Now that she was
