Chapter Twenty

Sid

I stood before the full-length mirror in my room, making sure my hair gel was doing its job. I wasn’t much of a hair gel kind of guy, but some occasions called for it. Like this party, for example. It was said to be one epic party, and I had to look my best. The same went with cologne, though I needed to borrow Winston’s because I didn’t have any of my own.

There was a knock on the door. “Yeah?” I called.

It opened slowly to reveal a red head. Then Molly came into view. She was back from hanging out with Ken already? He’d said he’d take her to see Times Square.

She smiled, but there was something different about this smile. Not only did it not reach her eyes, but her eyes were empty. It was like a ghost of a smile, something she only did because that was what she was expected to do. “Hi. Are you still going to that party?”

“Yeah. Why?”

She shifted from one foot to the other. “I was wondering if I can go with you.”

It was like music to my ears. Maybe lame to admit, but I was worried she was starting to like Ken and that was why she blew me off today. The fact that she wanted to go with me made me feel hopeful that there could eventually be something between us.

“Sure. I’m leaving in ten minutes, but I can wait if you want to get ready.”

She shrugged. “Whatever I’m wearing is fine.”

She had a green T-shirt and jeans on. Did I mention she looked cute in whatever she wore? “Okay, cool,” I told her. “See you soon.”

She shut the door behind her. I stared at myself in the mirror. Now that Molly was going with me—on a date, maybe? Nah, wishful thinking—I had to look my best. I clutched my chin as I turned from side to side, examining different angles. I bet Molly liked a certain kind of guy, the smart and put together kind. I was totally not that, but I could change. I would change my entire personality if that made her fall for me.

I changed my shirt and my jeans to a more sophisticated look. I brushed the gel out of my hair because it made me look ridiculous. But then my hair was all over the place, which was the complete opposite of sophistication. I sighed. This would have to do.

I met Molly in the foyer. She stood there, wringing her hands against her stomach, her gaze on the marble floor.

“Okay, I’m ready,” I said, grabbing my jacket from the closet near the door. Molly was already wearing hers. It was green and fluffy. Looked so comfortable I wanted to hug her just to feel how soft it was. Although there were many other reasons I wanted to hug her.

“How far is it?” she asked, and if I didn’t know any better, I though her voice sounded dull.

“Just five blocks from here. You okay with walking?”

She nodded, and we left the house.
