Chapter Eight
Rebecca set the porch swing in motion with the toe of her sneaker. The balmy evening, combined with the sound of rain pattering softly against the roof should have calmed her.
It didnât.
Later.
The word had the ability to make her insides flutter and her heart race.
Later.
She closed her eyes and rested her head against the back of the swing. Erotic images filtered through her mind. Tangled sheets. Tangled bodies. Tangled hearts.
Later.
Samâs dark eyes filling with heat and passion as he brought them together in a maelstrom of electricity and heat.
Later. Later. Later!
She snapped her eyes open.
Restless energy, not sexual frustration, she told herself firmly, made her skin feel tight and her insides like melted butter. She left the swing and crossed the wide veranda to the railing, where she braced her hands on the smooth wooden surface. She leaned forward to gaze out over the expanse of front lawn, mentally listing 101 reasons why making love to Sam Winslow would be wrong.
For every reason not to, her rebuttal was constant: she wanted him. Badly.
The realization alone should have had her packing her bags and hitchhiking, if necessary, to Minot to catch the first flight back to Los Angeles. But frigid was never a word she could attribute to herself, regardless of the nightmares of her past. Her marriage hadnât failed because she was sexually unresponsive but because theyâd never really been in love in the first place.
The squeak of the screen door snagged her attention. She looked over her shoulder and her heart rate accelerated. Was it, she thought, pulling in a shaky breath, later?
Sam moved silently toward her, then turned and propped his backside against the railing. Heâd showered. His hair was damp, and he smelled of soap. He didnât say anything, but she saw the flare of a match as he lit his nightly cigarette, followed by a plume of blue smoke.
Nervous, and at a total loss for words, she straightened and leaned her shoulder against the post. She slipped her trembling hands inside the pockets of her shorts and sucked in a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
Think about your cases. Think about poor Peter Grant and how he could lose his parental rights. The case was special to her, but no one at Denison, Ross & Furnari would ever know the deep empathy she kept buried inside for Peter Grant and other clients like him. Signed documents existed, stating sheâd legally relinquished all rights to her child, but if she truly wanted to fight to regain those rights, she could. Her chances of winning would be slim at best, based on the length of time Melanie had lived with Sam, but she was a good lawyer and knew she could convince the courts she deserved visitation. She would even settle for supervised visitation.
Except she would never do it. Melanie belonged with Sam. He was her father. And she would never do anything to hurt her daughter.
As much as she hated to admit it, her own father was right about one thing, she was being selfish.
