âI MISSED YOU THIS EVENING.â
Rosie glanced at the clock. Ten-thirty. Of course, it would be Hudson calling her cell phone. No one else knew sheâd be up this late. Rosie moved from her makeshift desk at the kitchen table to the couch, settling into the overstuffed cushions. Sheâd been trying to compose the letter Hudson had requested knowing that someday the truth would be told and sheâd accept the consequences. However, the best sheâd been able to come up with for the letter was short and sweetâCasey is Samuelâs son.
âHello? Someone answered the phone,â Hudson said, when she stayed silent. âMaybe I should come over to check and see if youâre okay.â
Since Hudson had told her everything this morning, heâd become more comfortable with her about other things, including his attraction to Rosie. Sheâd quickly learned her protests fell on deaf ears. She could have told Hudson her secret at anytime and that would have ended everything, but Rosie was a wimp. She enjoyed working on his campaign. She enjoyed being with him. And yes, she even enjoyed his flirtatious advances. Proving once again that Hudson was more honorable than sheâd ever thought he could be.
âNo home visits,â Rosie said, trying not to imagine him calling her as he sat propped up in bed. âYou know itâs for the best.â
Hudson chuckled. âThe best for who?â
Wisely, Rosie steered the conversation to more neutral waters. âHow did the appearances go tonight?â
âThe PTA speech went smooth, and the radio interview was pretty good. They had tough questions about policy specifics that we havenât yet designed programs for.â
Sheâd hoped the questions wouldnât be so intense this early in the campaign. As far as she was concerned, they were still searching for Hudsonâs silver bullet, that one thing that voters responded to.
âThen I played some basketball with the guys at the Washington Community Center and I think I threw out my back.â
âYou didnât.â Sitting up, Rosie was already rescheduling Hudsonâs meetings and appearances for tomorrow when he started to laugh.
âNo. But I did have to sit in the hot tub to work out the kinks because I donât have my own personal masseuse.â
It was a hint, but Rosie wasnât taking it. âWhat a hardship.â
âA man can try.â Hudson sighed. âI thought of Casey when I was playing ball tonight. We could go to the park this weekend and shoot some hoops.â
Standing, Rosie objected. Casey was already too attached to the man. She couldnât allow that when she couldnât trust Hudsonâs reaction to the truth. What if he didnât believe her and shunned Casey? Her baby would be crushed.
âI could have offered to bring over my boxing gloves.â Hudson sounded hurt. âMy dad made Samuel and I learn how to defend ourselves, but I figured teaching Casey basketball might help him fit in better.â
âHe fits in as well as I did in high school.â And Hudson knew how well sheâd done that. Criminy.
âIâm sure he does, but a little man-surance would be good in either case.â
She smiled, but couldnât allow him to continue unchecked.
