“I MISSED YOU THIS EVENING.”

Rosie glanced at the clock. Ten-thirty. Of course, it would be Hudson calling her cell phone. No one else knew she’d be up this late. Rosie moved from her makeshift desk at the kitchen table to the couch, settling into the overstuffed cushions. She’d been trying to compose the letter Hudson had requested knowing that someday the truth would be told and she’d accept the consequences. However, the best she’d been able to come up with for the letter was short and sweet—Casey is Samuel’s son.

“Hello? Someone answered the phone,” Hudson said, when she stayed silent. “Maybe I should come over to check and see if you’re okay.”

Since Hudson had told her everything this morning, he’d become more comfortable with her about other things, including his attraction to Rosie. She’d quickly learned her protests fell on deaf ears. She could have told Hudson her secret at anytime and that would have ended everything, but Rosie was a wimp. She enjoyed working on his campaign. She enjoyed being with him. And yes, she even enjoyed his flirtatious advances. Proving once again that Hudson was more honorable than she’d ever thought he could be.

“No home visits,” Rosie said, trying not to imagine him calling her as he sat propped up in bed. “You know it’s for the best.”

Hudson chuckled. “The best for who?”

Wisely, Rosie steered the conversation to more neutral waters. “How did the appearances go tonight?”

“The PTA speech went smooth, and the radio interview was pretty good. They had tough questions about policy specifics that we haven’t yet designed programs for.”

She’d hoped the questions wouldn’t be so intense this early in the campaign. As far as she was concerned, they were still searching for Hudson’s silver bullet, that one thing that voters responded to.

“Then I played some basketball with the guys at the Washington Community Center and I think I threw out my back.”

“You didn’t.” Sitting up, Rosie was already rescheduling Hudson’s meetings and appearances for tomorrow when he started to laugh.

“No. But I did have to sit in the hot tub to work out the kinks because I don’t have my own personal masseuse.”

It was a hint, but Rosie wasn’t taking it. “What a hardship.”

“A man can try.” Hudson sighed. “I thought of Casey when I was playing ball tonight. We could go to the park this weekend and shoot some hoops.”

Standing, Rosie objected. Casey was already too attached to the man. She couldn’t allow that when she couldn’t trust Hudson’s reaction to the truth. What if he didn’t believe her and shunned Casey? Her baby would be crushed.

“I could have offered to bring over my boxing gloves.” Hudson sounded hurt. “My dad made Samuel and I learn how to defend ourselves, but I figured teaching Casey basketball might help him fit in better.”

“He fits in as well as I did in high school.” And Hudson knew how well she’d done that. Criminy.

“I’m sure he does, but a little man-surance would be good in either case.”

She smiled, but couldn’t allow him to continue unchecked.
