Chapter Seven

A knot sat in the bottom of Melisa’s stomach. She didn’t remember ever being this nervous over a date. When the doorbell rang, she froze for a second. Using a yoga breathing technique, she concentrated on inner peace before she opened the door. Colton stood there holding a bouquet of flowers.

“Hi, I know it’s a bit cheesy to bring flowers but…”

“No, it’s sweet, thank you,” she said as she accepted them from him. “Please come in. I’ll put these in water.”

She hurried into the kitchen and pulled a vase out of the utility closet beside the backdoor. When she turned, she found Colton leaning against the kitchen doorframe, watching her.

“This is the first time I’ve been in one of these condos. Seems roomier than it appears from the outside.”

Clearing the lump from her throat, Melisa attempted polite conversation even though she’d rather rip off his clothes and ravish him on the kitchen table. One glance at the table and she had her doubts about it being able to hold them both, so filling the vase was the only option she’d allow at the moment.

“It’s one of the smaller units in the compound. The condos on the ends are the largest with three or four bedrooms and two baths. I don’t need all that space. Mine has two bedrooms upstairs and a full bath. A half bath on this floor, along with the living room and eat-in kitchen and there’s a small laundry room connected to the bathroom.” She cut off the bottoms of the stems and placed the flowers in the vase. White lilies, lavender irises and yellow daisies surrounded three roses, one red, one white and one yellow along with sprigs of greenery. “I think I’ll place these on the coffee table where I’ll get the most enjoyment out of them.”

She smiled at him and led him back into the living room. After setting them on the table, she asked, “Do we have time to sit and have a glass of wine?”

He took her hand and instant heat from his touch sent a shiver along her arm. The intensity of his gaze had her hoping they’d skip dinner altogether and stay right there.

“I invited the beautiful lady to dinner,” he said as he led her to the door. He opened it, pressed his hand gently against the small of her back, letting her pause long enough to grab her purse and keys off the stand beside the door before guiding her outside. He leaned close to her ear, letting his breath grace her lobe as he spoke. “Let’s eat first. We can have after-dinner fun here later.”

Their eyes locked looking at one another across her shoulder. There was no missing the intent. Melisa swallowed hard and forced her gaze away from his as she locked the door. When he took her hand, she was glad her legs worked properly. Sliding onto the passenger seat of his truck, she was grateful for the separation of his hand from hers. It gave her a moment to gather her senses.
