Faith 2:2

“Daughter, awake.”

I didn’t precisely hear him, but my mind reconstructed his words when I snapped my eyes open. I immediately regretted it. The enveloping citrine light was blinding, and my heart sank.

I was in Heaven.

As I remembered, the light prevented me from seeing further than perhaps a hundred yards. Within my vision I saw white marble buildings rising from an indefinable surface, with celestial residents going about their business. If the appearance of a Principality and unconscious angel attracted any attention, they were doing an excellent job of concealing their interest.

“I’m awake. Put me down.” My voice was raspy, and I was disoriented. Cadriel had me over his shoulder, head down, which didn’t help my frame of mind.

Cadriel let go of me, pushing me forward off his shoulder, and I dropped, just getting my feet below me. I wobbled and grasped his arm to steady myself. He tolerated me for a moment, then walked away. I considered trying to dash off, but where would I go? I was in Heaven. Angels wouldn’t help me, not after they learned I was running from the Throne’s justice.

I was so fucked.

“Where are we going?” I couldn’t imagine we were expected. After all, Cadriel said he was simply collecting me for my report. The incident with Ithuriel hadn’t entered it until he saw my blessed blade.

“Gabriel.”

Right. I’d forgotten he wasn’t bringing me to Michael, where I belonged, but to another Archangel. One whose name I’d heard in connection with the plot to eliminate Kalili.

I shivered, though Heaven is never cold.

The walk was timeless. All the buildings resembled each other, all the residents angelically perfect and somewhat amorphous, and of course there were no criers announcing events. We could have walked for minutes or years on Earth.

Eventually we arrived at yet another impossibly beautiful building. Gold and silver trim ran around the edges of the walls, and the windows reflected rainbows. It was amazingly gorgeous, and its glory was entirely lost on me. This was Gabriel’s compound, his office. The place where I would face an Archangel.

It was surrounded by a golden fence, with a single gate leading to a paved walkway. Cadriel nodded to the angels, armed and armored, standing to either side of the gate, then pulled it open.

For the first time, I wondered at the incongruity of guards in Heaven. What did Gabriel need them for? It certainly wasn’t proof of his involvement in the plot against us, but it didn’t help his case, either.

“Enter. You will be met.” Cadriel stepped to the side and held the gate.

“You’re not coming?” I didn’t like Cadriel, but he was a familiar figure. Facing Gabriel alone was not something I wanted to do.

“My task is complete. When you are finished, another will escort you to your judgement.” His eyes softened. “May you find peace, Daughter. And forgiveness.”

Without another word, Cadriel turned and stepped away. Within a few paces, he disappeared.

The gate closed behind me with a resounding clang. I wasn’t getting out of here without going into the building, and that meant I had to face the Archangel.
