CHAPTER 9

The light of dawn woke me, and I stirred carefully, hoping not to wake Forrest. She curled onto her side, and I covered her with my jacket.

I wanted to stroke her hair, feel her warm skin under my hands, but I resisted. Instead, I stood and walked the short distance to the dance floor to shut off the music still cycling through on the CD. I straightened my shoulders, smiled to myself, and let out a long sigh. There would never be another night like last night.

“Josh?” Forrest whispered behind me, and I turned. She clutched my jacket around her shoulders.

“You okay?” I held out my arms, and she walked into my embrace. We held each other in silence for a long moment. I stroked her soft hair.

Then she grinned at me. “I’m so happy.”

I must have looked relieved, because she laughed softly.

“I was…”

“…worried?”

My ears heated. “Well, yeah. I was worried about you. About how you would feel, now …”

She moved her arms up around my neck and smiled at me in a seductive way. “Now that we’re lovers?”

I combed my fingers through her tangled hair and gazed into her deep blue-green eyes. Not a trace of regret showed on her beautiful face.

“I love you, Josh. It was the right time. The right place.”

“I love you too.” I hugged her closer and blinked away a nervous tear I never want her to see.

“Come on,” I said after I could speak. “I’m starved. Let’s go see if anyone is up.”

I could smell of bacon and toast from the front porch, and my stomach started to growl. When we walked into the cabin, Grady gave us a quick wave. Forrest headed for her room, but I gave Grady an everything’s-cool smile and sat at the small kitchen table.

Grady popped in two more slices of sourdough in the toaster and turned to study me seriously. She crossed her arms and leaned against the counter. “Did you use it?”

I dodged her look and ignored the question by fiddling with the napkins and silverware on the table.

“Josh, were you careful?”

I cleared my throat. Of course I knew what she was talking about, but having a conversation with the police chief about safe sex had me squirming in my seat.

“Of course we were careful,” I said from my doorway. “Thank you, Grady. Manny gave Josh some condoms, too.”

“Good. Manny’s idea, but I agreed. So did your mother. We asked her permission.”

I walked across the room and kissed Grady on the cheek. “Thank you for watching out for us.”

Grady put her hands on my shoulders and tucked her chin. “Everything okay?” she asked in a super-serious tone.

My cheeks heated, but I looked straight at her. “Glorious,” I said firmly, glancing at Josh.

He grinned back at me.

After Josh ate an enormous breakfast, we slept, cuddled in the hammock, most of Sunday. A deeper sense of closeness surrounded us, and we caressed each other softly even while we slept. I’d never felt so content.

It was getting dark by the time we wandered back to the house arm in arm.
