AUTHOR’S COMMENTARY

By today’s societal norms, the executions at Mankato would shock the nation and most of the world. It is beyond imagination that a contemporary president would personally select 38 American citizens for execution for engaging in a war on US soil. Yet, it was the accepted norm during President Lincoln’s administration, as demonstrated by the following newspaper articles. The Sioux and other Native Americans were viewed by most as vermin requiring extermination, and the executions were simply an unpleasant necessity of a civilized nation.

From the Summit County Beacon, the hangings were less than a filler article with a single sentence announcing the executions.

Nearly 20 years later, The Saint Paul Globe dedicated a paragraph announcing one of the wooden beams from the gallows was now a “cherished” relic in the State University Museum.

Roughly 30 years after the executions, The Fort Scott Daily Tribune and Fort Scott Daily Monitor announced the proud display of a souvenir Sioux scalp.
