Chapter Five

Because there weren’t enough seats for all five of them, Nathaniel sat at the front of the ship in his chair and Tania sat beside him. The other three were forced to sit on the floor and strap themselves to the wall with some makeshift seatbelts Nathaniel created.

Timothy had voiced several concerns about how safe this would be but the older man had assured them that this spaceship was far more advanced than anything they had on Earth so they had nothing to worry about. He had also spent ten years studying, maintaining, and preserving the fuel for the journey back. Timothy still given him a skeptical look, though. Perhaps he had read Nathaniel’s mind and heard a different answer.

Regardless, Jackson told himself there was no cause for alarm and told the others the same… until they took off.

He wished he had brought earplugs because the engines behind them were so loud that his ears started to ring. Then his ears popped as they started ascending into the sky, the nose of the ship slowly angling upward until they were nearly on their backs against the wall, heading straight up toward the blue sky.

Then they were among the clouds.

Then the sky became black.

He closed his eyes, hearing his head pound and gulping until his ears finally popped, letting him hear and think straight again. As soon as that happened, he realized his butt was starting to float off the floor on its own. His arms were doing the same.

“I’ll turn on the artificial gravity in a second,” Nathaniel called to them.

Jackson almost wished he wouldn’t. This was super cool! He was flying!

Then he fell back onto the floor and his arms did the same. Dang.

“Open your eyes, Jackson,” Mary whispered.

When he did so, his heart leapt. He had never seen so many stars and so clearly. After a few seconds, Nathaniel turned the ship slightly so they could see Earth slowly get smaller behind them. It was strange to imagine being down there not too long ago.

“No turning back now,” Nathaniel said. “They only gave me enough fuel for the journey back. If you want to return to Earth now, you’ll need to refuel on Omiphia.”

No turning back! They only now fully resigned themselves to the fact that they might never return
