Chapter Seven

“And how is everything?”

Teal looked toward a very naked Jaxson as she listened to her mother. “Everything is fine.”

“You’re not ordering too much takeout?”

“No, Mom. Remember? I know how to cook.”

“Right, right.” Her mother sighed.

“How is Dad?” Teal asked.

Another long, drawn-out sigh. “We’re, er, we’re working through it.”

Teal nibbled on her lip as she listened to the sadness in her mother’s voice. Her parents were an odd couple. She knew her dad had cheated on her mother a few years ago, and yet, he was acting like a man scorned or something.

“Mom.” She glanced over at Jaxson and moved toward his sitting room.

It was Saturday morning. She had spent the night at Jaxson’s house, in his bed. The rain was still coming down thick and fast.

“Do you think you and Dad might need to consider a … divorce?” She had been thinking about it long before Jaxson had brought it up. When her dad left after finding out Bethany had cheated, Teal had wondered if it was time for her parents to realize they were too toxic for one another.

“We’re going to try, Teal Bear.”

Teal Bear.

Her mother hadn’t called her that in years. When she was a kid and had nightmares, her mother would always tell her that she was strong, like a bear, and no one could ever hurt her.

“I, I think coming here might have been a mistake, honey. Er, I’m sorry, I’m going to have to go. I love you, sweetheart.”

She hung up.

Teal stared down at her cell phone, and annoyance ran through her.

This wasn’t the first time her parents had been through this. Her mother hadn’t run off when her dad had an affair.

Pulling up her father’s number, she placed her cell phone to her ear and waited.

“Teal, honey, I have been waiting for you to call.”

“Seriously, waiting for me to call?” Teal asked.

“Sweetheart?”

“Dad, what the hell are you doing?”

“This is not for you to get involved with.”

“Not for me to get involved with. You left. I’m your daughter. Mom quit her job. She found us a nice house in a town in the middle of nowhere, and you didn’t even come and see her. What the hell is the matter with you?” She had never called out her dad. Never gotten involved in their crap like this. She always let them work it out.

“Teal, this is none of your concern.”

“You’re being unreasonable,” Teal said.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Mom had an affair. She slept with her boss. I know what it is about. You ran out to a different freaking country, and if I recall, when you slept with one of your PAs or secretaries, Mom didn’t run.”

There was silence. “You … knew about that?”

“Of course, I knew about it. How could I not have known? You and Mom don’t argue quietly, Dad. She took you back. You made it work, and now she has made a mistake, and you don’t even do the same for her. Are you going to finally let her go? Will you divorce her?”

“Honey, it’s not that simple.
