Chapter 7

Dr. Namagushi

J im drove her up the hill to his home. “When I found out about my cancer, I decided to sell all my stuff and move to Kauai. It seemed like a good idea at the time,” she said, continuing their conversation.

“But now?”

“I’m not sure anymore.” She shrugged her shoulders, looking suddenly like a small, helpless child. “I’m a stranger in a strange land.”

“Robert Heinlein.”

“Right.” She nodded. “I read that book years ago. Somehow I understand it now.”

“Must be tough,” he added.

Jim drove up into his driveway. Hibiscus plants were had been planted neatly around the property, now blooming in glorious red, yellow, and orange hues. A banana tree vigorously grew in the corner, next to the freshly painted house. The grass had been recently mowed. He got out and opened the front door for Sarah.

Sarah looked around with curiosity. Jim’s house was immaculately clean and looked newly decorated. The furniture was light-c olored wood furniture, with glass-t opped tables constructed out of cane.

“How long have you lived here?” she asked him when he returned.

“About two years. Do you like it?”

“It’s quite attractive, but looks like you just moved in.”

He laughed. “People say that all the time.”

“You’re awfully tidy for a man.”

“That’s because I’m a Virgo. Virgos are known to be well-o rganized and clean.”

“I’m afraid to touch anything or sit down.”

“Go ahead. I have a housekeeper that comes in once a week.”

“Must be nice,” she said, gingerly sitting down on a white couch, with floral and white cushions carefully arranged. “I like having a clean house, but I’d rather have fun than clean. I should’ve hired someone years ago.”

Jim had a sudden brainstorm and sat down next to her. “Why don’t you check out of your hotel and stay here instead? I have plenty of room, two bedrooms, two baths. We wouldn’t get in each other’s way. And I could take care of you.”

“Good heavens, no!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t tell you about my problem to make you feel sorry for me.”

“I know, but I’d like to have you here just the same.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“You can trust me. I’m not a serial killer or anything like that.”

She laughed nervously. “I didn’t think you were.” She considered for a few moments, while he held his breath. Fear clenched her stomach and she saw Lani’s face. “No thank you, It’s not a good idea. You’d be responsible for me if, or when, anything happened. That’s asking a lot.

You don’t even know me.”

“I want to. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. I don’t know how good a nurse I’d be, but I’m willing to find out.”

“No,” she said firmly.

“Okay,” he agreed. “But you’ll let me help out when I can, won’t you?”

“Are you always this impulsive?” She looked at her watch. “You’ve only known me two hours.”

“I follow my gut instincts.”

“Well, I don’t!” she snapped, then thought quickly of Lani and a stain of mortification colored her pale, wan face.

“I’ve got to be leaving for work soon. Why don’t you take a shower and freshen up while I’m gone?”

“I will.
