âI donât want anyone to take advantage of you,â Zoe said as she stepped up into the passenger seat of her fatherâs pickup.
âIâd like someone to take advantage of me.â
âEwwww. Papa.â
âWhat? I think the proper mourning period for Iris has passed. Iâm not aiming for priesthood here.â
âHave you checked up on Bridget? Sometimes I read the news wrapped around the funny pages. Older women can take advantage of the few available men.â
âIâm not the FBI. I donât do background checks on the older women Iâm interested in dating.â
âSo youâre thinking about seeing her?â Zoe wanted to feel happy for her dad. He was happy for her. But she had no ability to envision her dad with anyone else besides her mom. To her knowledge, heâd never dated anyone after their mother died.
âNot a secret, Zoe. I think thatâs what I just said.â
âNo, you said something about extra portions of food. Geez whatâs going on here?â Zoe said peering out from the passenger seat of her fatherâs truck. She hadnât been below Third since Nicki had picked her up from the airport.
âWhat do you mean?â
âAll these motels on this street. What is this? Weâre still on La Brea?â
âTheyâre probably SROs for the nearly homeless. I donât think theyâre highly ranked on those social media sites everyone talks about.â
âIs that a line to get on the freeway?â she asked. L.A. was so many contradictions all at once, mansions and shacks, wide boulevards clogged with traffic. It was like city planners didnât exist on this coast.
âThe meterâs probably on.â
âHow are you feeling? Should we pull over? Take a walk?â
âItâs twenty, maybe thirty minutes tops, dear heart.â
âI wonder if driving in L.A. traffic ranks up there with long haul trucking and flying?â Zoe asked, listing two things Dominic had been ordered to avoid. Then, in an instant, the traffic clog eased as if by magic.
âHardly. Look, the roadâs clear. Weâll be at the edge of the continent in no time.
âCan we take a walk on the beach? I havenât seen the ocean since Iâve been here. Itâs what I miss most about being in Greece. Budapest is nice, but landlocked.â
âIn those boots?â
âTheyâll survive on the strand.â
