STEEL AND STONE

Elvac sat motionless in his chair as silence reigned. The cool dim light of the room was calming, but he wasn’t in a position to be calm. No one was. Was killing a god even possible? And even if it was, how had they really reached a point where this was the right thing to do? Everything he’d ever believed in told him that destroying Sunne was wrong. Yet, at the same time, every memory of the last year that crashed around in his brain, and the guiding words he listened to about right and wrong, told him this was the only path left open to them now. The philosophies he read were always loyal and respectful to the gods, but they also taught that one could not stand idly by in the face of injustice. Any injustice.

Everyone was still and silent as they contemplated it. Elvac tried not to shift and twitch with the remnants of pain that wracked him. It was so hard to keep going, to stay focused, but he had to. What happened in this room would help determine his future.

Maykner was down to the last inches of his cigar, but he looked like he needed them. He sat deep in thought and puffed away. They all looked drawn and tense. Satinka’s plan wasn’t the best one, but they didn’t have anything to fight her with. Elvac couldn’t think of a better idea. The ex-priest looked at the girl through a cloud of smoke.

“How have you been hiding for so many years?” Maykner asked her.

“I’ve been posing as the daughter of a priest,” she answered. “A man like you, Nauel, acts as my father. I don’t think it’s occurred to the church to check their own.”

“Nauel,” Maykner chuckled. “I always liked him.”

“He never told me about the Five Star Islands,” Satinka breathed. “Do you think‒”

“Nauel is a good man,” Maykner cut her off. “If he didn’t tell you it’s likely he had his reasons, but I can’t imagine he was trying to betray you in any way. Why would he be your foster father all these years if he didn’t want to help you? It is more likely Nauel is one of the priests who believe that the islands are a myth. He isn’t very high up the ranks of the priesthood after all. The other option is that he knew, but didn’t want you to get killed. The odds are very much against you on this one, Your Majesty.”

Satinka nodded slowly. Maykner watched her with serious eyes.

“Don’t be mad at him, child. You don’t know yet, and he was only doing what he believed to be right. Remember, his life hangs in the balance of your lie too. The church thinks it is impenetrable. They don’t believe they can be infiltrated or betrayed. To their credit, they do have a god on their side.”

“A three-eyed god who manages to be blind,” Sabeh muttered.

“Not blind Sabeh, just mad,” Maykner corrected. “We don’t know how he lost his mind – only that something changed.
