“Harry? Alex Webster.”

“Where the hell are you?” Harry asked through what sounded like a mouthful of sandwich. The phone connection buzzed with static.

“Hey—Saturdays are supposed to be a day off,” he joked with false jocularity. “Listen. I have a favor to ask.”

“Shoot.”

“If it’s okay with you, I want to hold onto those files I borrowed through the weekend.”

“Getting close to something?”

“I think so. I’m checking out a hot lead right now.”

Harry slurped a drink. “Just remember your buddy when it comes time to pin on a few medals.”

“Don’t you worry, Harry. If I can pull this off, we’ll crack this story together.”

Harry grew serious. “I gotta level with you, Alex. I’m worried about all this secrecy. If these cases have a common thread, I want you to spit it out. I won’t have fingers pointed at me, I’m telling you up front. I’ve got Katie to watch out for.”

“Don’t you worry about that pretty wife of yours,” Alex said. “No one’s going to get into any trouble. I’m real close to some answers, but I’m out on a limb. With a little more time I can crack this.”

Silence spun out. Then: “You owe me. Remember that.”

Alex broke into a grin. “I’ll pay you back for this, I promise. Thanks.”

And he would, too—in a way neither one of them could have imagined.
